The thought of cancer provokes fear whether one is predisposed genetically, has experienced the disease's devastating effects in their own or loved one's lives or harbors dread. Relief is found by seeking out knowledge, resources, discovering what is within one's control to change, and how to espouse purpose and meaning in life. All of these are addressed in Five to Thrive, a book written by two highly reknowned professional cancer specialist women who have walked their talk during their own cancer journeys.
In 2009 I came to know co-author Lise Alschuler when my mom became a patient of hers. I learned a tremendous amount from Dr. Alschuler and am fortunate to have tried and tested the guidance found in Five to Thrive for myself even before the book was written. That advice currently protects me against the hereditary odds of getting cancer, manage ongoing stress, and enables me to live a more joyful and healthy life. I am also comforted that my mom was able to experience an extra year of quality living after beginning naturopathic treatment while I simultaneously became a better support person and caregiver. Now.the same principles, resources and lifestyle counsel that were so beneficial to us are readily available to others on the pages of Five to Thrive.
Five to Thrive embraces the mind/body/spirit dimensions of personhood. Through learning what, and how, foods, vitamins, and supplements can enhance the body's own immune system, one empowers their internal cellular army to be equipped, able, and ready for action should the mutant celled enemy we know as cancer proliferate. Discussion of the five pathways that cancer exploits and how to guard them are addressed utilizing a reader friendly format accompanied by graphs and insights from the author's own cancer histories.

As a cancer patient I loved this book. Have had so many books recommended to me to read that left we wondering what I could do to promote my own health. This one was really impowering. I think it's a must read for anyone who wants to be in charge of their health, their own internal environment. As a patient you can have some control of your future.

I just ordered two dozen of these books today with the intention of handing them out to patients with the simple instruction, "Must read!"

Put simply the book covers every topic I want to talk to my patients about but that I don't have time to. Besides, the authors do a far better job explaining things than I probably would end up doing. Easy reading yet manages to cover some complex topics. I don't know of a better book for every cancer patient to have in their possession. It's a "must read" book for anyone with cancer.

Being a man with lymphoma there wasn't anything specific for me. Some interesting science. The spiritual bit just seemed like opinion not useful. The five thing seemed contrived. the elements were not weighted. All in all an interesting book but not a guide book for cancer recovery. My doctor loved it and recommends it to all his patients.

My doctor works with one of the authors. I read the earlier book several years ago. Five to Thrive is very inspirational. I, also, have had cancer and am looking toward a healthy and more normal life.

First - the concept of thriving (vs simply surviving) is a central theme in the book! The practical advice is on point, well written, and provided in the most general way to give the reader an excellent starting point. I bought the book hoping to reduce my chances of getting cancer, but especially to offer some hope to my wife who is genetically predisposed to the disease. On that subject, the authors offered convincing evidence that family history doesn't have to assure the disease; that the bad genes can be programmed in a way to reduce the risk. I was already familiar with supplements and some of the the lifestyle issues, but this book taught me a lot! I highly recommend it.

Great book with great information and backed by research. If someone has the discipline to do the work, unfortunately most people don't. Interesting to learn howhe body creates cancer and that it CAN be prevented!! We have just been brainwashed into thinking we have no control over it. YES we do!!

I love this book. I feel empowered with an arsenal of cancer-preventing actions that I can own and act on. The authors of this book have put some of the ownership for cancer prevention back in the hands of the reader, and I can't help but think that this sense of empowerment in itself is beneficial to one's health. I think the world needs more guides like this. Broken down into easy, achievable sections, and filled with a sense of power, this book is one that I will continue to refer to and reread for years. This isn't a daunting reference guide. Its 'real'.
