LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!! I have the VHS version, the DVD version, and now I can watch it on Amazon Prime too!!!! This was the Martial Arts movie to beat all others. Five styles, a hybrid, a cool story line, some suspense, and let's not forget the action.

I remember the first time I saw this movie, and I was torn between which style I wanted. Lizard could clime walls...but Toad was damn near invincible..Snake had some cool moves....arrgghhh the decisions.

If you have never seen this movie, give it a watch..and be prepared to be entertained.

I remember first watching this as a kid on Ch. 5 in New York at noon. I loved it back then. And then the Wu used this movie, as well as the other Shaw Brothers movies, as inspiration and this movie became relevant again. And I watched it again and loved it again.
You can see that this movie along with the other Shaw Brothers classics also served as inspiration for many of the action scenes we see today in the movies.
These movie was ahead of its time even though it looks cheesy by today's standards.
It is still great!!!

The only special feature on the disc is a commentary from Bey Logan. But hey, I love that guy, and it's a really informative and entertaining commentary, so buy this disc! Oh, and also, of course, it's one of the greatest kung-fu movies ever made, so if you're even interested enough to look at the comments you need to own a copy.

The Five Venoms is an excellent film! If you enjoy the Shaw Brothers productions, or even just 70's and 80's Kung Fu drama, action, beat em' up films; this one is on the level. The plot consists of a "comic book" like set of Chinese-super-Kung-Fu-heroes/villians. All the actors display a set of real world acrobatics and Kung Fu skill, and enlist era appropriate effects to properly showcase the characters "superhuman" dynamic. Plot twists of a sort, are a bit trying to the viewer but are redeemed by mild character development that brings on highly enjoyable action scenes. Audio dubbing is good and of course gives the "old Kung Fu flick" vibe almost immediately. It does contain some violently bloody scenes, but can easily be brushed off by the younger viewers as corny and over the top. 5 out of 5 is truly earned with this one. An admirable masterpiece in its genre!

I saw this on TV many years ago and thought it was a great martial arts movie. When I spotted it available on DVD a number of years ago on Amazon, I bought it. The version I got was just OK. It was like watching the movie on a TV broadcast but at least I had a copy. Then Dragon Dynasty came around and made 36th Chamber of Shaolin available which was another one of my favorite martial arts movies. So now they came out with Five Deadly Venoms in both DVD and Blu-ray so I bought the Blu-ray version. Boy is it a significant difference from my old dvd copy. My old dvd version was from Master Arts Video distributed by Steeplechase. There may have been better versions around but I wasn't aware of them and it was the only one available from Amazon at that time. If you have an older version that looks like (or just slightly better than) a TV broadcast of the movie, get this one. Also this one includes commentary by Bey Logan which I found interesting. He knows all about the various actors and their background (i.e. the other movies they starred in, which studios they worked for, etc.) If you like martial arts movies but don't know much about the stars, directors, producers, the chinese studios, etc. you may find it interesting as I did. And if you have a blu-ray player... and the blu-ray version is even cheaper than the equivalent dragon dynasty dvd version (least currently it is cheaper), how can you pass this up. (If you want to find out about the movie itself you can read the various dvd reviews about it.) Just wanted to provide info about this great version of the movie.

If you like martial arts movies, then this is the first movie in your collection. This transfer is the clearest version I had seen to date and the dubbing was really well made.

***little spoiler warning***

The movie consists of 5 main martial artist taught by the senior teacher of the venom clan. The senior teacher is ill and will soon die so he sends out a new student to track down the 5 venoms to make sure they are good and not evil.

The senior teacher tells the new student to search a town where his co-teacher is hiding with the massive treasure they had acquired in the clan. The student goes into the town and learns its not easy to find the venoms but things picks up when there is a murder of an old man.

I enjoyed this movie and its full action without to many downtimes. Be wary that this picture also has torture but its minimal and consists with the plot, not to bad as some of the new movies I seen.

One of my favorite old-time kung fu movies. Saw this many years ago and didn't think about it again until I saw it for sale. Like all other kung fu movies a little cheesy in its dialog and acting. However, I loved the variety of fighting styles used by the different characters. Lots of fun to watch. Would be a good introductory movie for newcomers to the kung fu genre.

Yang Tieg is given one last mission by his dying master. He is to find his masters five students who he taught the five deadly venoms to, they are known as the Scorpion, the Lizard, the Toad, the Centipede and the Snake. Tieg is to find out which of the previous students are good or bad. Those who are bad he is to kill.

This is one of the most popular Kung Fu movies and would go onto produce many spin off's which would reprise many of the same actors that appeared in this. They would go onto be known as the Venom Mob.

Chiang Sheng is cast as Yang Tieg, who is many there for the comedic value. He dresses up as a beggar and spends most of the film standing around in the background watching from afar so he can determine who is good and who is bad. The villainous members are the Scorpion (Sun Chein), Centipede (Lu Feng) and the Snake (Wei Pei) and the good guys are The Lizard and Toad. My favourite members happened to be the good guys, who were played by Kuo Chui (Lizard) and Lo Mang (Toad).

The pace does start off quite slow with us been introduced to the different members of the town and us trying to figure out who the venom five are. So in parts it plays out as a detective story. It is only the identity of the Scorpion that is kept hidden until the very end, it is however quite easy to figure out who he is.

The fight sequences are impressive and at the films climax we have a great five way battle which shows off the fighting techniques of each venom skill. With this been a Chang Cheh film, violence is expected. We get to witness as the Toad is tortured with a Iron Maiden and with a heated steal breast plate that is scolded onto his back.

Overall I'd rate this as a Kung Fu classic that's a must see.

As an elderly kung fu master (Dick Wei) reflects on the achievements of his esoteric kung fu school, he decides that it was probably a bit naughty of him to train and unleash unto the world The Five Venoms; five experts in death, who each have a particular ability designed for assassinating an opponent. The Venoms, he continues, do not know who the other Venoms are and will only ever reveal their special skills in an emergency, but are sure to be hunting for their ill gotten gains as assassins, now kept secret from them by another kung fu master. He explains this to his remaining student ~ who has been taught a mixture of all five styles, but would not be able to beat anyone of the five venoms on his own, being him too much of a jack of all trades and kung fu master of none ~ as way of atoning for his sins, he sends the student out to hunt down and kill any of the venoms who are still evil, find the treasure and give it to charity...

This is regarded as a bit of a Shaw Brothers classic, it features a number of usual suspects in the cast and along with some garish violence, has some very distinctive characters. Chang Cheh weaves quite an interesting web of detective work, which gives us a bit more than just the usual revenger, as he slowly reveals to the audience who The Venoms (both good and bad) are, and of course (without giving too much away) the bad guys team together, as do the good guys creating a story of corruption and deadly intrigue, with a venomous showdown at the end. The kung fu on offer is very good indeed and the main players, with the likes of Phillip Kwok (Mad Dog in Hard Boiled) and perennial bad guy Lung Wei Wang are all excellent!

The region 1 disc on review from Dragon Dynasty is up to their usually high standards.
