I'm very fond of this movie, and I was extremely pleased with the quality of the Blu-ray version!

However, I should warn other buyers that the DVD which came with it would NOT play on my BD player or my computer. The BD player displayed an error message which said, "Check Region Code", and my computer said I didn't have the proper drivers to play the disc on Windows Media Player.

Therefore, I simply threw away the DVD and kept the wonderful Blu-ray. At $8.92, I wasn't too disappointed.

Some other Amazon reviews had mentioned that the regular DVD that comes with this Blu ray version doesn't play in U.S. Blu ray players. I checked this out on mine and I got an error code on my player too. Why would they have an all-region Blu ray and a European version DVD in the same package? So unless you have an all-region DVD player, you can use the second DVD as a drink coaster, a frisbee, use it to signal a rescue crew if you get lost in the wilderness. Also, the Blu ray doesn't have a menu, it's a dark screen with a small generic "Play Movie" at the bottom, I find this kinda odd too. I watched the Blu ray for about ten minutes just to see if it would work and it played fine. The widescreen picture looks very good, the picture colors and clarity looked much better than my old standard DVD copy. This is a European DVD.
I saw this movie in the movies as a kid when color televisions were a novelty and the broadcast television pictures were iffy at best. (Nope, no cable TV then folks!) So it was a real treat to see a bigger-than-life movie, in vibrant color, and sound that enveloped you and gave you a real breathtaking theatrical experience. It also gave your parents a few hours peace when they dropped you off for the Saturday afternoon matinee, as it was always a double feature playing at the movies.
While his work may seem dated by today's standards, Irwin Allen always gave you your money's worth both at the movies and on television.
Thank you Irwin Allen for all of the years of entertainment that you provided for me as both a kid and an adult. You always were a master showman.

Sunday afternoon nostalgia

This was another often shown movie on WKBW Buffalo channel 7 on Sunday afternoons, usually at noon. Never got to see the 20 minutes of most of these movies due to travel time back from church (f^&*^&*!) When I was a boy it was colorful and fun and seemed exotic. I bought it because I haven't seen it in at least 35 years and I wondered if it would look the same to me.

The bad news is that it is a rare film that holds up to a child's memories. This movie is supposed to be set in Africa but it looks like it was filmed at the same ranch they filmed just about every tv movie and series of the 1960s and 70s. Of course with the cuts to the Gondola set and the interior sets and the stock footage of African animals and African vista matte paintings with the miniature balloon filmed in front, it all holds together...but just barely.

The good news is that it is still a light hearted romp and very colorful. There is a catchy title song and Barbara Eden and Barbara Luna for beautiful scenery (smile). Fabian as well if you like your male eye candy. It also moves along quite quickly and is very family friendly. Very young children would find still find it exciting. It was nice to revisit and I probably will again now that I own a copy.

I never heard of this movie, or saw it as a kid, but I saw it on TV maybe 20 years ago and just loved it. It really takes me back to my childhood of going to the movies on hot summer afternoons to take advantage of the air conditioned theaters. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because they played the theme song all through the move and it's like an ear-worm. It's a nice catchy tune but the way over-did it. Barbara Eden is, of course, stunningly beautiful and Red Buttons is always a treat.

Irwin Allen Kitsch Epic Still A Fun Ride!

A fond memory from childhood. For boys growing up in the '60s and '70s, Irwin Allen was a god. From feature films to TV shows, his tastes were squarely aimed at pre-adolescent boys. All action and no fluff -- like character development, nuance and subtlety or dialogue that rises above "Look out!" and "Hang on!"

FWIAB also suffers from Allen's disregard for logic, character, physics and natural law, but it's still a fun ride. The balloon and (WAY oversized) gondola look really cool, L.B. Abbott's pre-CGI visual effects still charm and dang if the title ditty sung by the Brothers Four isn't catchy enough to whistle at the end credits.

I was happy with the DVD and still am (because of the few bonus features included), but have to say: the HD transfer really outshines it.

While I may be waiting for a Blu-ray release that might not ever come, I'm content that I can revisit it in HD via Amazon at my leisure. Or as long as Amazon will offer it.

Red Buttons won an academy award/Oscar for Sayonara but he was better known for his comedic performances! This was one of them! The kids & adults would all enjoy this movie. The special effects are not as good as they are now but consider when this movie was made & they are pretty good! It's just a fun movie without a deep dramatic plot but the idea of preventing slavery is the underlying theme & is not made fun of. I would recommend it to anyone who just wants to relax & have a fun time at home with the family, a large bowl of popcorn & some sodas! Much less expensive than going to the movies nowdays!

Funny movie, but not the Jules Verne story. No superb lanscapes, but they made a very good Studios Movie. Blu-ray : OK. Fergusson, here, is not a character as important as in Jules Verne's novel, and you have not the Nab's story. The slave merchant is at the top ; Donald also ; the girls are fine. Jules Verne was writing for children, and this movie is fine for children. No hard times, even in a drunken cheikh's home.
