I am a huge fan of So Percussion. I was introduced to their music (taken from their incredible first album) in a live concert and I still remember the impact of their brilliant, mathematically precise, breathtakingly beautiful progressions from simple repetition to complex overlay. I like this album--Five and A Half Gardens--there is a great deal of variety but it doesn't quite rank with their first or even their second album. I'm not quite sure why. There are sections in this CD that compare favorably with their earlier efforts, that achieve a rich layering of percussive counterpoint, but then those moments fall a little thin and degenerate into something that isn't exactly mindless noise but doesn't weave a spell either. As far as the spoken and sung text, my jury is out on that. I don't dislike it, but it feels gratuitous.

The DVD that comes with this CD is a graphic counterpart to Five and a Half Gardens and is enjoyable in its own right--an animated modernist dreamscape.
