Be careful with the knife

Be careful with the knife
Most of the shovel is solid, the design seems good, and while I haven't put it through it's paces. I'd say it could withstand "moderate" abuse. The failure point would be the metal disk, so I think you could shovel and occasionally whack things. The knife comes razor sharp, but it is seated in PLASTIC. Tighting the knife into the body for use as a handle cracked the plastic. I would be EXTREMELY scared to use this knife for absolutely anything involving the smallest amount of pressure, lest the plastic crack and the razor sharp knife go flying towards my face or someone else.It was almost a really good product, but cheaping out on one of the most dangerous parts of the tool is absolutely unacceptable.

A friend of mine sent me a link to this while on a fishing trip in Idaho. I live in the mountains in Colorado and I ordered this and was really impressed when it arrived. The presentation in the box is great and the tool itself is even better. Lets start with the canvas. The blade cover is high quality and nice to have as it protects the outer bag. The stitching is very high quality on both.

The blade of the shovel is crafted in a way that it is going to hold up to a beating outdoors. The lock ring is bomber and stays put. The way the other pieces screw together make for a very tight kit all around. The whistle/firestarter and the small knife/sawblade are very handy as well. Although I would carry an additional knife and folding saw in my bugout bag.

I have seen many of these small shovels and this is the best one I have seen and put my hands on. If you are in the market, this is a great piece of kit.

This thing feels very sturdy in the hands. The first thing I checked was the ferro rod. That was the first thing to fail on my old one. This one feels like it will hold up to fire lighting at camp each month. It doesn’t have a lot of excessive tools like other models. I already have 1-2 of most tools already included with existing kits.

Same for the rest of the parts. Everything came together easily and tightly. I wasn’t aware, but parts of the handle have neoprene padding. I am a bit concerned of that getting torn up since I will be wearing the shovel attached to my pack waist belt. It’s irrelevant though because I planned to make a 550 cord wrap anyway.

Looking forward to continuing to be the only one with a shovel and always having to do the work. Do me a favor and order something like this so those of us prepared can worry about our own site :) love ya!

I purchased this to use when metal detecting. The weight and size make it easy to carry and move around.
The blade is small and is great for not tearing the terrain up like some detectorists do. The shovel is also very sturdy and I have had no trouble using it to pry stones / large objects up. The area I was most recently working has been cow pasture for ~150 years and turns rock hard when it dries, this was not the best tool for digging that stuff but it was certainly better than the rock hammer pick I've used in the past. I was also detecting on the beach and it worked just fine for that, though it's a bit small for moving a lot of sand around.

Pros:
Sturdy blade and handle. Hasn't bent or deformed yet.
The blade holster keeps it in place with 3 velcro strips. No tree branch is going to yank this off my pack.
Lightweight.
Small form factor.

Cons:
The foam grips are bad. The upper one slid down after one day and stretched out so much it is now part of the lower grip.
Difficult to attach to molle / bags. The single velcro loop is not easy to attach to a molle strip or pack.
Unnecessary larger bag. I'm not disassembling the shovel every day, this bag is really unnecessary.
Unscrews when digging sometimes. This is something I'd expect with this sort of assembly, compared to the solid handle types that use a nut to tighten the blade in place.
Due to the handle length, the hoe/pick mode tends to just send dirt into your face.

Suggestions:
Replace the foam grips with the paracord or replace them with textured metal.
Loose the goofy string on the end, it just gets in the way.
Add more of a profile to the handle end of the blade as a platform for pushing on with your feet.

I've had this item for a handful of years now and It's still going strong. I keep it in my vehicle in case of emergency and use it around the house as well. Goes with me when I'm headed into the woods, with the compact size and case it all comes in making it easy to carry. I would recommend it, and have many times. I don't see myself having to buy another one anytime soon, but if something happened to it I 10/10 would get this one again.

pros -rather good all around, very packable weight but strong enough to get into some earth. i always appreciate an extra blade, saw, and ferro rod too. Good tool for the price, recommended over trowel type blades

cons - it doesn't have a perpendicular handle, which always helps, (but it does fold down into a pick-style shovel if you need to really get into tough earth) and i don't suspect that the soft-grip material on the handle is going to last through a great deal of serious use, but when it rips, I'll just wrap it with 550 paracord and keep shovelling lol

good piece of kit, cons are totally workable

...well...with my new shovel! I received this shovel from my family as a birthday gift this week. Great packaging matched a quality item. (For those who are thinking about presentation when gifting)

I had seen this shovel on a YouTube video and was curious. The person using it was beating the crap out of it and was raving about its toughness. My first impressions when assembling the shovel were extremely positive- really amazed actually. The YouTuber's review was consistent with the quality I was seeing. I was surprised by how light and versatile it was considering the quality and sturdy feel. The shovel blade is pretty solid when you tighten it and lock down- no wiggle when extended to shovel position. (I really hate the super loose blades on these kind of products.) The shovel blade is freaking tough and well made- I have no complaints.

I have had these kinds of products from cheap army surplus, Gerber and SOG. This beats them all hands down. Having said all this fun with one caveat- I have not had a chance to use it yet. I'll circle back to this review when I do...

We bought this shovel for camping trips. It folds down and fits into a storage bin. While we were camping, we were hit with 3 days of torrential rains. We used the shovel to trench around our dining fly and redirect the water away from our campsite, as we were at the bottom of a hill. We also used it to scoop the ash out of the fire pit and it worked really well for that too. We probably used it everyday for a week and it held up well, rinsed off and it's compact size makes it a great tool for a square drop trailer, where there's little storage.

Very good product on inspection.
The excess carrying pouch that comes with was tossed out, I kept the one for the shovel end only, as this is going in my vehicle.
The shovel has zero edge to it, so I had to grind one on the provided bevel and finished with a whetstone to sharpen.
Good value for the item.

Good product. Previously bought a cheap $25 folding shovel...that was basically a wobbly useless kids' toy for digging in the sand. This product is the real deal, sturdy and robust, all the tools work...one thing I will say the axe functionality is obviously not crazy robust since the product is relatively light weight to be used as an axe, I wouldn't abuse that to chop trees or anything. Overall very good though.
