I've tried several books for the more complex fixes but invariably got overwhelmed by the amount of dangers, specialized equipment, and the fear that if I screwed it up, I'd flood the house, cause it to explode, or somehow destroy my family and my investment. After reading I'd invariably call a pro and shell out the money...gladly!
Fix it in a Flash doesn't try to overwhelm you, but rather give you just enough information to inform you, instruct you, and empower you. It's refreshing in the way a light beer is. Not too heavy, not too light! My hunch is that Jodi directed the tone of the writing, and wanted it to be inclusive. Steve has a casual air in his writing which helps diffuse the tension of tackling a home repair. When talking about affixing a toilet to the floor, he doesn't caution about cracking the porcelain when tightening the bolts, but rather advises one to "Tighten those puppies down!"
The DVD is also a nice visual resource, though one could argue that it's a bit thin with only 10 of the most common fixes. Jodi and Steve do a nice job explaining and showing the steps on camera, even if their banter is a tad sugary , "Hi honey, want a caulk-tail?"
I guess the real measure of any fix-it book is whether it actually finds a home on your shelf, and gets well dog-eared over the years. Fix it in a Flash has found that spot on my shelf, and feeling newly empowered, I'm tackling a toilet replacement. Maybe next week.
