O AM THINKING OF INVESTING IN A STANDING DESK. ALL THITY YEARS I WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER I NEVER PUT ON ANY WEIGHT AS I WAS STANDING MOST OF THE DAY. AS I LOOK BACK ON IT, MOST OF MY COLLEAGUES WERE SLENDER TOO.
ONCE I BECAME A SHRINK, I SAT ALL DAY EVEN IF I BIKED TO WORK. I AM NOW 30 LBS HEAVIER THAN I HAVE BEEN MOST OF MY LIFE.
IT IS ALSO MY OBSERVATION THAT FRIENDS WHO HAVE PROSTATE TROUBLE ARE GUYS WHO EAT HIGH FAT. I DON'T THINK IT IS JUST LUCK THAT I HAVE BEEN SPARED - OR MAYBE THE LUCK IS I HAD A MOTHER WHO BROUGHT US UP ON THE LOW FAT FOODS SHE PREFERRED. MY YOUNGER SISTER AND I ARE STILL GOING AT 87 AND 89.
FINALLY, AS A SHRINK, I DID EVERYTHING I COULD TO PERSUADE MY CLIENTS TO TAKE UP AEROBIC EXERCISE. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT 20 TO 40 OF RUNNING OR JOGGING MAKES A BIG DENT IN DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY. ODDLY ENOUGH MORE THAN THAT WON'T HURT YOU, BUT IT SEEMS TO OFFER NO FURTHER PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS.
IN SHORT I THINK THIS BOOK DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SETS OUT TO DO.
