Editorial Reviews

Review

I was a member of Ship's Company, USS ELDORADO (AGC-11) during the WestPac Cruise in 1967. I served with LT(jg) Converse and have looked forward to his views and insights of those days. His description of shipboard life during the Viet Nam conflict is very close to the attitudes shared by many of the young sailors and officers I have talked to over the past 50 years who served their country in that time frame. I recommend this book to all who question the respect owed to those who answered the call to service during the disputed conflict. Mr. Converse accurately portrays the life, conflicts, attitudes, dedication and concerns that defined Active Duty Navy Members serving on ships deployed to the waters of Viet Nam during the Viet Nam War.
--David Lindstrom
I just finished reading "Flagship" by A. J. Converse. Set aboard the USS Eldorado, at the height of the Viet Nam war, the lives and adverntures of the sailors are followed from beginning of the Western Pacfic cruise until the end. Being stationed on the USS Eldorado from 1969 until 1972, I could see the characters come alive, and feel their emotions as they endured all that was thrown at them. The book brought back vivid memories of the ports visited. The sights, sounds and smells became as real as if I were there. I was transported back in time to the endless steaming up and down the coast of Viet Nam, the anchoring, weighing anchor only to continue steaming. I was a member of 1st. Division, The Picket boat crew, and stood all the other underway watches as well. Well done, LT.

From the Author

A ship comes to life when her crew boards her, lights off her boilers, turns on her generators, and her electronics, and then pretties her up and takes her to sea. This story follows the amphibious flagship USS Eldorado AGC-11, aging veteran of Iwo Jima and Inchon in 1967 as she faces a new kind of war in Vietnam. The book tells of life on a US Navy ship through the eyes of her crew. But it goes deeper; by telling a poignant tale linking a man who helped weld her steel plates and later died at Normandy and his son who served on her in the Vietnam combat zone. In so doing the story reaches into the very meaning of life.
