Fits Kamado Ceramic Grills: Big Green Egg - Medium, Large and XL KamadoJoe - Big Joe 18 and 24 Primo Grills - All The controller monitors the temperature of your smoker and controls a blower that manages the amount of air flowing to the fire, which controls the size of the fire and thus the amount of heat it generates. Flame Boss uses this mechanism to make your smoker work like an oven. Just set the temperature you want and Flame Boss will take over. It also functions as a meat thermometer and timer, two tools commonly used by pit masters. Flame Boss smoker temperature controllers are easy to use while still giving you many useful and convenient features. Easy to Use – not even an on/off button to press (it’s always on when you plug it in). There is only one mode, Automatic. If you want to cook at the same temperature as last time you don’t have to push a single button!

First, the negative.
The probe temp receptacle in the control module must have had a loose solder joint or something as by my 3rd smoke, it wouldn't read the pit temp (smoker temp) reference point that it uses as the +\- airflow logic to control the temp. I tried different probes w the same result and even switch that probe over to the "meat probe" receptacle and was able to get an accurate reading. The receptacle itself was the issue, and I found if I put a significant amount of upward pressure on the probe plug while inserted into the receptacle it would get a reading.
That being said, I notified flame boss of this explaining the situation and after a brief request for some info, they shipped me a replacement module free of charge (returning original module). Relatively painless
Now, the positives.
This thing is excellent. One of my biggest issues is simply hour many hours of your life smoking things takes. With upwards of 12-15 hours for a brisket, it's extremely resource intensive for me to make brisket, which also happens to be my favorite. Once I got through the wifi setup part, which was a little cumbersome just because you don't have many buttons on the module, I was able to control the device from the Internet and all options and details became available.
I was extremely happy with the functionally of this product, and the accuracy of the temp when controlled by the fan (once I closed the top vent sufficiently, which they do recommend.
You actually control the device from a webpage which they setup for your specific device. You can sign in from anywhere, change temp, set alarms (pit&meat), at basic logic when meat reaches certain temp, and shows a very nice graph of all your relevant temps over time (desired, actual, and meat) graphed against each other.
I found the fan to do a very good job of dialing in actual temp to desired temp once things reach steady state.
The website functions perfectly and while an app might prove better long term, the website was idiot proof and for the sake of simplicity, is probably the best idea until they make 2.0 of this product.
I setup a wireless camera on my char griller Akorn Kamado and was able to go run errands like go to Costco, target and other stuff people usually do on a weekend. I was able to monitor the smoke during the whole time and I didn't have a single problem with temps getting out of a +\- 3 degree range. The camera was there just because I'm paranoid and I'd be able to confirm nothing was lighting on fire or some other extreme event.
Long story short. I have a busy life, full time job that takes up a lot of my time and 2 kids. Dedicating 15 hours straight towards smoking is prohibitive for me. This device has basically given me back 12 of the 15 hours of my life (per smoke) during these smokes and it's well worth the relatively high price tag just in terms of what my time is worth to me. Now, if they could only add a second temp probe for a second meat in the smoker or if your cooking the point/flat to different temperates (195/180).
I would highly recommend this device to anyone who loves smoking meats, but has difficulty finding 15 hours to dedicate to it. It's done a good job maintaining the right temp when I follow instructions and the web based controls are as simple as can be once you've got it connected to your wifi.
Really my only "gripe" (I use that term loosely) is the lack of a second meat probe and the minor quality issue that was addressed quickly by customer service.
I now have my desktop - smart phone & ipad all connected to Myflameboss.com
Now I'm getting ready to run a test cook (no meat) and see how the Flame Boss controls my BGE temps.
Up Date: If you are undecided or on the fence about spending this much for a gizmo - DO IT. I have now used it 4 times with perfect results. Start your fire set your temperature ranges and forget it.
My last cook was a 215 degree slow cook of a pork butt. I noticed my dome temp was a little high and closed (left a tiny opening) the upper vent. My temps remained high and low and behold I received a message telling me the dome temp was still high and the likely cause was too large of an opening in the vent. I closed the vent completely and the temps dropped to my exact setting and remained at that setting for over 6 hours.
My guess is that the forced air from the fan kept a slight over pressure in the dome allowing just enough venting (through leakage) to maintain my desired temp. In a word the FlameBoss is AMAZING. It is hands down the best cooking aid I have ever purchased.
So I retired the Digiq and bought the Flame Boss 200-Wi-Fi. What an UPGRADE it is! It works flawlessly with wi-fi to my laptop and iPhone. In my opinion the fan on the Flame Boss is also more efficient.
I didn't give it 5 stars for only one reason: the probe cables. The meat probe just stopped working. The Flame Boss people replaced it immediately. Then the clip tip on the pit probe disconnected from the cable.
I did have one fan with a wire that separated from the motor and I was unable to repair it myself. One quick call to customer service and a replacement was mailed with no questions asked. I'd highly recommend the Flame Boss for it's functionality and performance, as well as them standing by their product and replacing defective items.
