Review
After appearing in movies, TV, and porn parody, sci-fi icon Flash Gordon returns to the comics in this jazzy miniseries. A retooled origin story sends Flash, his girlfriend Dale Arden, and eccentric Dr. Zarkov off to the planet Mongo, where they are separated and thrown into the eponymous war between various squabbling races - hawkmen with big wings, lionmen with shaggy manes and big fangs, etc. and tyrannical emperor Ming the Merciless, whose idea of mercy is to let everyone else serve him or die. Besides being impressively athletic, Flash is bright enough to realize that Ming's enemies would have a better chance of winning if they'd stop fighting each other. That's difficult to achieve; when, for example, hotheaded Prince Barin of Arboria catches his fiancÃÂée Princess Aura (who's also Ming's rebellious daughter) kissing Flash, a swordfight immediately ensues. In short, there are enough ethnic conflicts and personality quirks to keep the action bubbling. Deneen's script keeps the plot surprisingly clear, and Green's art combines mangaesque design and dramatic coloring. It's good, old-fashioned fun, freshly polished. --Publishers Weekly

As a Flash Gordon origin, the story is very basic: Meteor storm... Zarkov and Flash travel to Mongo... Ming the Merciless... Yadda Yadda Yadda. As a science fiction story it is sub-par. The biggest problem with the book is the art. It is abysmal. It leaves the reader squinting, trying to decipher what is happening in each comics panel. It tries to resemble manga with dis-proportioned anatomy and too much content per panel.
Go elsewhere for your Flash Gordon fix.
At first I felt they made Flash Gordon to much of a Renaissance man but
1) They do exist
2) Its a comic
It well written, the art work is like high end animation. Everything is like a pitcher from a movie.
Thats all I'm willing to say, as you will hate me for telling you more.
Also when ordering this, get "Flash Gordon: The Secret History of Mongo" also by Ardden Entertainment
It takes place after the Flash Gordon: The Mercy War TPB but before the new series
FLASH GORDON: INVASION OF THE RED SWORD (not out yet).
Its a stand alone Graphic novel, but worth having. Tells about Plant Mogos History, and foreshadowing of things to come.
The Mercy Wars, is one of the stronger drawn comic books based on Flash Gordon. Of course, Alex Raymond will always be my favorite artist followed by Al Williamson, Mac Raboy then Dan Barry. Paul Green's art is slick and modern, worthy of its place in Flash Gordon history along with Brenden Deneen's writing.
