This isn't for children. This is an adult oriented film. Great music. Great dancing. Storyline is average. The thought is, no matter where you're at in life, always pursue your dreams.

Flashdance is an upbeat, feel-good movie about chasing your dreams no matter what life throws at you. With catchy music, fun dance scenes, and an underdog story, it’s the perfect movie to lift your spirits.

    Edit: 11/30/23

When I initially did my review back in 2021, I said how Flashdance was just an "okay" movie. I said how it had its good moments but it didn't stand out to me. My 2021 viewing was my first time watching it. I don't know what came over me, but I felt like watching it again in 4k when it finally came out in 2023. My 4k copy from bestbuy got damaged so I sent it back and rewatched my 2013 blu ray one more time. I'm so glad I got the urge to rewatch Flashdance because it absolutely blew me away on my second viewing. I regret calling it "just okay" because it's truly the embodiment of a classic feel good movie. It has an innocence and purity that a lot of modern movies just can't replicate. The opening scene alone with "what a feeling" playing as the main character Alex (played by Jennifer Beals) rides her bike around the city is now one of my favorites in cinema. It perfectly sets the tone for the movie. This movie was one of my mother's favorites and while I didn't get to see it with her unfortunately.. I do understand why she loved it so much. The tone, characters, acting, and especially the music, just works so perfectly together. I'm sure the music choice had more of an impact if you saw it back in the 80s, but it still holds up at showing you what song was popular back when this movie first released. I didn't grow up in the 80s, but I easily recognized all the songs and it was great to feel how it can branch out to an extended audience this way.

I would also like to add a warning that there's a dance scene with strobing and flashing lights that lasts for a few minutes just incase anyone is epileptic or sensitive to that. I'm personally not epileptic or sensitive to scenes like that but I felt like that scene went way too heavy on those effects. It's the scene where Alex (Jennifer Beals) dances to the song "Imagination" by Laura Brannigan. She has a painted face and is wearing a large red coat.

Video quality is phenomenal for an 80's movie with many scenes being vibrant and full of color with natural film grain. Sharpness isn't the best but its not bad either as many scenes allow you to see a lot of details on both the actors and their clothes or even the locations themselves. I did feel like skin tones were probably the only main issue as some scenes had slightly oversaturated skin colors. There's also 2 blu ray versions of this film. The one released in 2013 which is this one, and the one released in 2020 under the name "Paramount Presents: Flashdance". I haven't seen the 2020 version but the 2013 one is honestly still really good. The 2020 version is also included in the 4k combo pack that comes with the 4k and blu ray.

Sound quality for this blu ray is really good. It has a surround soundtrack that plays everything crystal clear, especially the music scenes. I did feel like some scenes had minor inaudible lines/low tone of voice but these issues were fixed in the 4k version and I assume the 2020 blu ray as well.

The 2013 blu ray is a very solid transfer, especially compared to other blu ray releases of older films at the time. I didn't notice a huge leap in quality for the 4k which I think speaks for how good the blu ray has held up. I'd definitely recommend buying both if possible to see which one you prefer. Both have their pros and cons, but you honestly can't go wrong with either.

(3 1/2 stars for the film, 4 stars for the 4K UHD release)

"Flashdance" is a 1983 romantic dance drama which was a huge hit grossing $201.5 million against a production of only $7 million. It was stylishly directed by Adrian Lyne from a script by Tom Hedley & Joe Eszterhas and was produced by Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer. The soundtrack was equally huge going 6 times platinum in the United States & selling over 20 million copies worldwide. The lead of the film Jennifer Beals (who was only 18 years old at the time of filming) is positively radiant, dynamic, sexy and delectable throughout. While the movie itself by objective standards is cheesy, predictable & hackneyed, it is also a lot of fun and a true crowd pleaser. Guys will enjoy the amazingly toned female bodies on full display (Jennifer Beal's incredible body and face truly are a work of art!) while women will enjoy the romantic aspects and female empowerment. It is energetic and engaging throughout its 97 minute running time. Most critics hated it at the time of its original release but audiences didn't care about critics in this case. It also functions as a nice time capsule of the early 80's and will prove quite nostalgic for people who grew up in that legendary decade.

Warner Brothers initially released "Flashdance" on blu-ray back in 2013 featuring a nice transfer and some interesting extras. Paramount as part of their Paramount Presents line would reissue the film on blu-ray in 2020 featuring a director approved 4K restoration from the original camera negative which was an improvement on the 2013 disc. The frustrating aspect of the 2020 blu-ray release is that some extras were left off which were part of the 2013 release.

For the film's 40th anniversary, that 2020 4K restoration has been unleashed on a dual layer 66 gigabyte 4K UHD disc including HDR10 & Dolby Vision in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The bit rate does start out a bit lower than expected during the opening titles sequence but once the movie has started proper, the bit rate jumps into the 70's for the most part occasionally getting into the low 80's. While the 4K UHD transfer is a bit darker than previous bluray releases (the 2020 blu-ray is also included with this 4K UHD release), it also looks much more natural and lifelike overall. Both the HDR10 and Dolby Vision really make the image pop particularly during the multiple dance sequences in the bar. I did find the skintones and overall contrast/black balance to be slightly better with Dolby Vision enabled though those who only have HDR10 capable 4K players and/or tv's will still be getting a superb image too. Detail is immaculate and every single pore and curve on Jennifer Beals' perfect physique and lovely face is on full display. I do find the 4K UHD presentation a more than solid upgrade over the 2020 blu-ray release. I doubt the film looked this great during its original theatrical run.

    Audio options include:
    - English: DTS-HD Master Audio
    5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit)
    - German: Dolby Digital 2.0 (224
    kbps)
    - French: Dolby Digital 2.0 (224
    kbps)
    - Japanese: Dolby Digital 2.0

I was really hoping that Paramount would have sprung for a new Dolby Atmos mix but that unfortunately was not the case.

Subtitles options include English, English SDH, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.

Extras are only on the included 2020 blu-ray as follows:
    - Filmmaker Focus: Director
    Adrian Lyne Discusses
    Flashdance
    - The Look of Flashdance
    - Releasing the Flashdance
    Phenomenon
    - Theatrical Trailer

A digital code is also included and the release comes with a non embossed slipcover. A steelbook option is also available.

Fans of "Flashdance" should be thrilled with how the film looks on 4K UHD disc. While the lack of a Dolby Atmos mix is disappointing, the lossless 5.1 mix still more than does the job. I do also feel that Paramount missed a huge opportunity to not only restore the missing special features from the 2013 blu-ray but to also add some new extras in celebration of the film's 40th anniversary. The presentation of the film though is of utmost importance and in that respect the 4K UHD release is a winner. Anytime we can get vintage Jennifer Beals sexiness in 4K UHD is a good thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flashdance Blu-ray "What a feeling"
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 15, 2013
Paramount have finally released Flashdance on Blu-ray Region A and B,and what a fantastic upgrade from DVD.

    Blu-ray video quality:

Continuing the theme of contrasts, Lyne and cinematographer Don Peterman (Men in Black) shot a movie about artistic aspiration in the gritty urban style pioneered by Lyne's countryman Alan Parker for Fame (1980). Lyne then softened the imagery by dispersing smoke into the air in almost every shot such that, according to editor Bud Smith, there were always a few takes that couldn't be used because the actors were obscured. (Midway through production, the studio panicked and ordered that no more smoke be used, and Lyne posted an assistant to watch for the approach of any studio people, so that the smoke machine could be hidden before they arrived.) The result is an often soft, delicately colored image of a type that has gone almost entirely out of fashion in today's world of digital photography and post-production.

Paramount/Warner's 1080p, AVC-encoded Blu-ray is a superb rendition of Lyne's and Peterman's vision, as it was seen by audiences in 1983. The grain and texture of the imagery have been retained without diminishment, but they never become obtrusive (unless one is allergic to even a hint of grain). No attempt has been made to compensate for the original photography's softness with digital tools, which is the correct choice, because the image has fine detail that artificial sharpening or excessive contrast could easily overwhelm. Besides, Lyne and Peterman carefully designed Flashdance for visual contrast between the muted everyday world and the garishly "hyper-real" stage show at Mawby's, with its intense colors and bright lights. A Blu-ray treatment that failed to render both ends of this contrast accurately would not do justice to the film. This Blu-ray does.

Blacks are deep and accurate, and shadow detail is properly rendered in places where you're supposed to see it. Minutia of hair, faces, costumes and the rusting Pittsburgh cityscape are readily discernible, even if they don't pop off the screen in every scene (they're not supposed to). The average bitrate of 26.44 Mbps is sufficient for the rapid dancing scenes, primarily because there are more than a few episodes of simple, quiet conversations in between. In any case, I saw no compression artifacts.

Flashdance was released in Dolby Surround and has been remixed for 5.1, which is here presented in lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1. As is typical of Paramount's remixes, the approach is conservative and does not attempt to create gimmicky rear channel effects where none are warranted. The stereo separation in the original mix was often effective in placing sounds of such locations as the steel mill to the left or right of characters, and those effects have been preserved. Otherwise, the chief beneficiary of the lossless multi-channel treatment is the historic soundtrack. The songs sound airier and more "opened up" than I have ever heard them before, from the moment Irene Cara's voice comes in over the opening titles. The dialogue is occasionally overwhelmed by Giorgio Moroder's instrumental score, but this has always been the case with Flashdance. The sound mixers understood what was important, and dialogue took a backseat to the beat.

Paramount has released four DVD editions of Flashdance. The first in 2002 was featureless. A "special collector's edition" in 2007 added the array of features that have been ported over to this Blu-ray; that edition was reissued in 2010 (without the "special collector's edition" label) under the same cover used for the Blu-ray. In between, in 2009, Paramount re-released the featureless disc as part of their "I Love the 80s" series but included with it a limited edition CD of the soundtrack.

Note that all of the featurettes listed below are essentially part of the same documentary, cut up into segments.

The History of Flashdance (1080p; 1.78:1; 14:43): Lyne, Bruckheimer, associate producer Lynda Obst, Michael Nouri and actor Kyle T. Heffner (who played Richie the cook and aspiring comic) discuss the origin of the project, although there is reportedly much more to the story than they relate. For example, no mention is made of the involvement of other directors, although Brian De Palma was reportedly attached for a time, before leaving to make Scarface.

The Look of Flashdance (1080p; 1.78:1; 9:13): The same group, plus editor Bud Smith and costume designer Michael Kaplan, discuss the film's visual style, especially its costumes.

Flashdance The Choreography (1080p; 1.78:1; 10:10): The important new participant here is choreographer Jeffrey Hornaday. Lyne also discusses the various stunt doubles used to transform Beals into an extraordinary dancer, as well as the "dancing cop" sequence.

Flashdance: Music and Songs (1080p; 1.78:1; 6:14): Giorgio Moroder and music supervisor Phil Ramone are the key participants here. (Note that Bruckheimer says he always referred to the film as a musical.)

Releasing the Flashdance Phenomenon (1080p; 1.78:1; 8:53): Bruckheimer, Lyne and others discuss the film's release and its surprising success.

    Teaser Trailer (1080p; 1.78:1; 1:31): Tantalizing.

Trailer (1080p; 1.78:1; 1:58): The trailer is effective, and it includes some quick cuts of footage that did not make it into the final film. Unfortunately, no deleted scenes appear to have survived.

I don't know when Flashdance will be released in the U.K but their is no need to wait, buy this U.S version with confidence it plays on U.K players.
