The solar cell is not really big enough to charge the device quickly. I intentionally drained the battery all the way on this then left it outside. After four days, it only charged to two bars. So if you want to get this hoping to only charge using the sun, you will be disappointed; you will need large solar cells to accomplish that. This is good enough to get just enough of a charge to charge a smartphone for emergencies. Charging from the sun is however good enough to charge the pack and light up the flashlight; so this is indeed good for emergencies.
The battery pack itself is high capacity. You will be able to charge just about any smartphone a couple of times with this. The flashlight is also quite bright and useful. It can do the SOS signal or a strobe if you ever need help.
I would recommend this for anyone who goes camping and wants a little extra safety. This would also be a nice battery pack to keep in the car.
To date I am thoroughly satisfied with the charger, and would recommend it to anyone going camping or to the beach in need of an economical way to charge your devices away from an outlet.
The rated charging for solar is only 200-250 mah per hour, I left it on my porch for 3 days (18 hours of direct sunlight) and it didn't even charge 25% of the battery. If you are ever stranded, it is not likely to help you once the stored charge runs out.
The flashlight is extremely bright and gives off roughly 200 lumens, enough to light a room in a power outage for 18 hours. It does strobe and steady flashing, should you ever want to throw a rave, or call for help. The edges are well protected against a drop. It is heavy at nearly 1 lb, so keep that in mind when traveling.
This model delivers on drop and splash survival, reasonably quick single device charge at 2.1A, and a bright flash light. Fail on the solar charging.
I charged it up using a regular USB charger the first time. Then threw it in my bag. That was a couple of weeks ago. And I took it out to check it today and it was still fully charged. It has charge indicator lights that show you the charge amount when you press the button for them. It also has built in LED flashlights and those work in three modes, Steady on, slow flash and fast flash. And they are bright enough to use for walking at night or for around camp.
The nice thing is that you could use this as an emergency flashlight and not worry about batteries, as you simply leave it out in the sun and it recharges. You can clip it or lash it to your backpack and let it charge as you walk.
It has a tough rubber case, a lot like an Otterbox for a phone and seems very well made!
I am going to run the charge down as low as I can (probably leave the light on (see how long that lasts) and then see how long it takes to charge from the sun from that state. I will post the results when I have that done. But I liked it so much I wanted to get a review up on it and let others know about it. It really is nice.
It's about the size of a larger Cell phone and slightly thicker.
I will update when I get the other testing done!
UPDATE/ FOLLOWUP! OK I ran the charge all the way down. And then left it out in the sun. Charged fully in about 7 hours of sunlight. I live in Florida! ;) The flashlight lasted for hours being left on, not sure exactly to the minute but the flashlight lasted at least 3 hours of steady on, and was off after 4.5 hours. So somewhere in between that!
As for charging phones, I took this thing with us to Disney a couple of weeks ago, clipped it to my backpack I carry around the parks and we charged 3 phones a couple of times during a long day and the charge in the item never dropped below half. I think because it was charging as I walked around the park also. Charges phones fast too! My phone was at about 20% and it charged it completely in less than 45 minutes.
So I am liking this thing more and more now. I will be buying a couple for Christmas gifts this year as they are great for anyone who is active outside and needs a battery pack to charge their phone and it charges itself!
I recommend it even more than when I put up the original post!
