Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the US government has been raising the strategic threat that Washington poses to Russia. The US government violated its agreement not to take NATO into Eastern Europe. The US government withdrew from the ABM treaty.
The US government arranged with Poland to place US anti-ballistic missile bases on Russia's border. The US changed its war doctrine to permit pre-emptive nuclear attack. The US government financed "color revolutions" in Georgia and Ukraine, former constituent parts of both Russia and the Soviet Union.
The US government ignored Russia and attacked and dismembered Serbia. The US government trained and equipped the Georgian military and encouraged Georgia to attack the Russian peacekeeping force in South Ossetia. And now Washington has overthrown the democratically elected government of Ukraine and installed a puppet government.
Washington's Kiev coup is a direct strategic threat to Russia. Ukraine was long part of Russia and the Soviet Union. Indeed, southern and eastern parts of Ukraine are former territories of Russia that Soviet governments added to Ukraine for various reasons.
Crimea, overwhelmingly Russian, was stuck into Ukraine in 1954 by Khrushchev. Khrushchev did not include Sevastopol, the site of Russia's Black Sea fleet, when he transferred Crimea to Ukraine. Sevastopol was transferred to Ukraine by US pressure when the Soviet Union broke apart and Ukraine emerged as an independent country.
In exchange, Russia was given a lease on the naval base until 2042. The lease permits 25,000 troops and specified numbers of military aircraft, tanks, and artillery in Crimea. The 16,000 Russian troops that the White House and presstitute media intentionally misreported as an invasion force were already present in Crimea under terms of the lease agreement.
Washington either overlooked or worked with the Russophobic ultra-nationalist groups in western Ukraine who sport Nazi emblems and speak of killing Russians and Jews.
Washington used its funded NGOs ($5 billion according to Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland at the National Press Club in December 2013) to begin street protests when the elected Ukrainian government turned down the offer to join the European Union.

Stephen Lendman writes in a style that is concise and wastes no words. Every sentence it seems is packed with a singular thought that describes it as he sees it. Which makes for a directly easy read. The US instigated or facilitated the coup in 2014, and now Ukraine is a flashpoint. My heart goes out to the people who suffer under this war zone as a result. The plan of the West is to surround Russia on all sides, militarily. And blame Russia for defending itself. Isn't that an old game? Demonize Putin. Putin bad. Rah Rah.
It's an irresponsible understatement to label this a must-read. With the neo-fascists ensconced in Kiev intent on violently crushing the activist citizens of eastern Ukraine and with the new billionaire candy magnate's vituperative denunciations of virtually every proposal or protest emanating from the east, it's clear NATO, Washington imperial planners and the IMF are using almost every possible means to encircle, harass and destabilize Russia, focusing now on its western flank. Over the past several years Putin and Russia have been striking out on their own independent course free of the dictates of certain Western investors, this is their unforgivable sin. Unlike how Yeltsin the drunkypoo threw the entire nation open to be robbed, pillaged and exploited, Putin's regime is steering Russia toward more independence and less meddling by foreign capital.
As some of the brilliant, cosmopolitan thinkers and intellectuals showcased in Flashpoint in Ukraine explain, this Western-Washington aggression towards Russia, starting with the Nuland planned putsch it inspired in Kiev is all about capitalist imperial aggrandizement with NATO expansion and IMF/EU hegemony at the forefront.
Flashpoint in Ukraine points out that Washington guaranteed the naive nitwit Gorbachev that NATO expansion would forever go easy and never infringe on Russia's territorial integrity. The book expounds on the specifics of how and why this guarantee quickly turned into a cruel manipulation that now has the world witnessing NATO troop buildups in Poland and the Baltic states. And of course these same powers just ousted a President of Ukraine who had spurned an IMF austerity program. Obviously Russia has no historical reason whatsoever to be even a tiny bit concerned about its western borders and neighbors, it has absolutely no historical reason for concern whatsoever, absolutely none. Throughout all of history the one constant was that Russia could always be rest assured that its western border neighbors would be nothing but safe, peaceful and secure. Why of course.
This current "pivot to Asia" is dangerous business, it's a strategic move by the western capitalists to steer international investment toward Wall Street and the London market and to isolate two of the emerging BRICs. China and Russia are to be subdued and kept in dependent subservient roles. Moreover, as some of the very astute writers in Flashpoint in Ukraine document, the fact that Russia is an ally of Assad and has always been steadfast in vetoing any sort of military action by the United States and the Zionist power configuration against Syria and Iran is yet another reason the Western instigated and financed coup in Kiev was orchestrated.
Putin's been vilified and demonized by the silly and politically brain dead Pussy Riot and the corporate media mouthpieces throughout much of the world, he's enemy number one, not the Washington war planners and western intelligence agencies that have viciously attacked a handful of nations over the past 12 years, it's they who are largely viewed as benign actors, it's Putin who's to be pilloried.
As a debater it's always been acknowledged that resorting to the nuclear war argument as the ultimate consequence is a cheap and shrill ploy that plays on exaggeration and fear mongering. However, in this particular case there's nothing melodramatic about citing possible nuclear war as a horrifying possibility. Lendman's put together an expansive yet cogent work that explains all one needs to know about the neo-Nazi takeover of Kiev and the dangerous destabilization campaign aimed at a Moscow that refuses to kowtow to the prerogatives of Western power.
