It does what its description says--extends the downspout to drain where you want it to drain. As far as stretching it out--I needed 4 pieces. I'm small and not unusually strong so I almost rejected this after reading reviews that said that it was very difficult to extend. The first piece did seem a bit difficult, but I did it by myself with only a little exertion and a bit of time. The other 3 pieces sat in the sun for a while before I resumed this project. They stretched out much more easily. You can start the process by flexing the piece over a railing or around your waist or over your leg. Attaching to the downspout is easy--it just slips on as does each piece onto the one before it if you are using multiples. We are expecting a good bit of rain in the next couple of days. I'll update if I find problems, but I don't expect to.
Update: No problems through rains--Everything stayed together. I'm ordering for another downspout.

I've used Flex-a-Spout extensions for years without issue. Always very easy to install, didn't leak, held up for several seasons of extreme heat and cold. Recently needed to replace them because they'd become brittle after a dozen years of exposure. Expected a short, easy job installing the new ones, but instead had a massive struggle trying to connect them. The old version had one end slightly larger than the other, which made it easy to snap them together. No more! Both ends are now roughly the same size and it's impossible to insert the "smaller" end inside the "larger." No amount of shoving, twisting, sweating or cussing gets the job done. If you need to buy more than a single extension, avoid these.

I like this very much. It is non-fuss. It fit and attached to my standard opening downspout excellently. It opens up and twists to suit the terrain and circumstances. Can't say I love it because, well, it is only a downspout and not a work of art or music. But the two I ordered are allowing the water to just gurgle away from the sides of my house. A good purchase.

Withstood a hurricane

Two years later still works great. Ugly. But it works. One of my metal downspouts has continually come off, but this one has stayed in place, even through a Cat 5 hurricane. (Still baffles me, but it didn't budge.) If this were camouflaged by bushes (which I suggest), I wouldn't mind the looks. But out in plain view, it is somewhat jarring to the eye. But functionally, it can't be beat.

I ordered 3 of these, one for each of 3 downspouts. After wrestling with all 3 of them to extend them, 2 were too short for the distance they had to go so I ordered 2 more to connect for a longer length. The next day we had a good, steady rain and when I went out to see if they were working, no rain was coming out of them. Instead, the rain just sat in them and backed up, defeating their purpose. It seems like they can't be laid horizontally and chaining them together makes the pooling worse. I've had to take them off and apart and dump the water out of them; I've also dug out some dirt so they're on more of an angle to see if they'll work better with the aid of gravity. Also, they are flexible, but extending them takes some muscle. Not as easy as they make it sound. Overall, not all that happy with these things.

I have 4 of these around the house to help move water away from the house foundation during heavy rains and so far so good. They fit our downspouts snugly, so they won't come off due to wind or accidental nudging. While they are quite long, I had one downspout that needed to be extended further than one extension's length, so I took two, squeezed the fat end of the second and stuck it in the fat end of the first (the one that connects to the downspout).
