Easy to read and understand So different, but not so farfetched.
This is an imaginative and, often, funny story which satirises our society and our hopes, dreams and self justifications. The beginnings are especially good reading as we learn more about the ridiculous mores of Dodge and it's wider workings.
Nearly five stars but not quite enough at the end. However, very much recommended for a truly unexpected fun read.
The story is about Carl Intoever, a normal guy who hates his job, but this is good because it makes him work harder, which gets him that much closer buying a ticket to the New World, which everyone is told is a paradise. His job is to watch what is posted on social networks about
his employer, and, if it's negative, get rid of it as soon as possible. That seems to be what everyone's job is. It's Big Brother come to life.
Carl gets involved in things he shouldn't and discovers things he shouldn't know. Gee, I wonder what will happen to Carl.
This book is great, and I can't wait for the next one. Highly recommended.
Imagine in the future you live in a world that your last name was your family's motto? Meet Carl Intoever. A simple citizen of Dodge. All employees have contracts, including him. He lives with his girlfriend, Maria. They have a nice apartment that can only be accessed by climbing a pole. Yes! Just picture a fireman pole. Everyone has camera's in their clothing and lifelong that record everything you do. Each person has a number value that fluctuates depending on what you do. The only way to see another person's log is to have their password.
Carl works for one of two largest businesses called SafeTalk. People sit in front of monitors and censure or delete any negative comments against them and the second business, FutureBrite. FutureBrite takes all children from their parents to teach and train them how to be good citizens and productive workers. Children have administrative care workers who monitor them, feed them, go to school with them, go to therapy or tutoring classes, etc.
For years there has been a resistance growing. Carl becomes acquainted to the movement through his friend Natalie and a mysterious character who is bullying him through electronic feeds. Once Carl opens his eyes and sees what is happening, he makes a final stand.
There are so many characters that you will meet. Each is distinctly different and has an agenda. As you read you will find similarities to our world now. All Carl really wanted was to go the New World and start a life with Natalie. You will see the world through Carl's eyes and what you see will astound you. No longer will you wonder how a meek man becomes a change in society. Everything has a cost. Just how much are you willing to give up for your family, work, friends, movement and love?
This futuristic atmosphere could indeed be where we are headed. If so, we will definitely need each other to survive.
