Never have I been SO GLAD I subscribed to his newsletter as this month, when one story was free on his site and one was free *only* to newsletter subscribers like me. This title, FLIGHT TO FIGHT was free to newsletter subscribers. And I LOVED it! Completely deserves all 5 stars.
Reasons why this title grabbed my attention, held it, and the romance worked!:
* Lee Ames (our Sergeant Night Stalker hero) is just the kind of guy every strong, capable, determined woman wants by her side. I was in love with him, *fast*.
* The situation he finds himself in, flying his Little Bird, finding himself cornered (so not standard MO for Night Stalkers) less than 500 meters from the Suez Canal, pinned down by a firefight. Everything changes when the person he's been sent to exfiltrate isn't just female, but in care of a little girl, and someone Lee already knows, at least by reputation.
* The rapidly developing affection and romance is based on solid stuff. Buchman's a master of ensuring the binding emotions and reasons are all there.
*Donya (our female main character) is a tough woman, one determined to make a difference, change things for the better for her own country (Egypt). She knows way more than Lee anticipated, and can see more than enough of him to comprehend his very nature. Surviving a battle, together, can do that to a man and a woman. Buchman's writing brought it all into sharp focus.
* I adored the wrap-up. The scenes wherein the story resolves are incredibly well done. Kudos to Mr. Buchman for a story that will stay with me for a long, long time.
I highly recommend the whole Night Stalkers series by M.L. Buchman to readers of contemporary military romance, romantic suspense, all niches like that. Romance is a key element of Buchman's stories but not the only component. They'll appeal to men and women alike. Strong, capable women we can appreciate, admire, and wish to be like, and the gorgeous, strong, capable, tender, loyal men they/we deserve. (Buchman's statement on his website is very much along these lines.)
Sensuality Level: very mild
Violence: mild to moderate (but it's between the scenes, off-stage)
