I really love the series. I feel a strong connection to the characters. Who hasn't wondered why they faced certain challenges in life and questioned the fairness of it all? Galine struggled ever since her father's death. She has faced so many challenges and it is only recently that she has been given a chance at love. Even that love is threatened by fear.
This series has hooked me since the first book. With most series, you can easily correlate it to another series or author's style. This one is really original. There are many elements at play and the author continues to surprise me.
Galine has been the focus of much of the prior story but in this book we get to spend quite a bit of time with some of the other characters as well. It moves the story forward in an interesting direction.
They have had to uproot their lives to try to keep off the radar of SIrin. Sirin is out of commission during a lot of the book so the more day to day issues take the forefront like shopping for a new home and marriage and family issues. It was enjoyable to see them getting a chance at a more normal life for a time.
Sirin has been up to some very horrible deeds and they come to light. She is a very dangerous enemy and I fear what is to come for them all. The end of the book is very harrowing and will leave you anxious for the next book.
I received a copy in return for a honest review.
Sirin, Galine's archnemesis and the immortal being charged with delivering souls to hell, took a shotgun blast to mass center a few months ago and has been regenerating her organs ever since. The shotgun-wielder was Galine's husband, Sasha, and the betrayal of Sirin by her son Alex means that her fury will be mighty when she emerges from her regeneration period. So Galine's family and friends remain in hiding from Sirin's vast network of spies and crime syndicates in the Americas. They know she is stealing souls that were bound for Heaven but are determined to find out why so they can stop her and release the souls, which include some of the people they have known and loved.
As they steadily gather information on how to defeat Sirin and take down her network, the group is also working to patch the fractured relationships among them. Kat and Galine; Alex and Sasha; Sera and Alex: there is much repair that needs to happen so they can all work as a team against her. The dual joy and anxiety from the complications a baby has brought to the household also has them all on edge. Then there are the visions Galine is experiencing. They have become worse, lasting for weeks at a time, leading to confusion about who she is when she awakes and further befuddling her as to their possible meaning. As Galine is forced to examine how the visions will serve to help her in her role as the Gamayun, she continues battling with her purpose. The immortal part of her has not forgotten her humanity, which directs her everyday life and her belief system. That belief system, which does not include faith in the God that gave her the powers of the Gamayun, is often at odds with Sasha's beliefs, which causes friction between them. She is always waiting for the other foot to drop, for God to exact his revenge on her relationship by taking Sasha from her the way He took Sasha's dad Jeremiah from his mother, Manya. Then there are the numerous visits from Zhanna, the mysterious child who appears only to Galine to deliver impatient and exasperatingly-cryptic messages. We, as the readers, are left wondering what it all means, and trying to draw our conclusions the same way Galine has.
Only one thing is crystal clear to Galine's group: time is running out before Sirin awakens and unleashes her furor. Will the group be prepared for the unavoidable battle that must take place, or does Sirin have even more tricks up her sleeve than they could have anticipated? We can't wait to read the finale!
When I told my wife that the next book comes out in November and is the final one, she looked crestfallen to have to wait so long. These books are that good :).
I received this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review.
