James Albright is an average pilot with average stick and rudder skills, but has an above average desire to learn and instruct. He spent twenty years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft commander, instructor pilot, evaluator pilot, and squadron commander. After retiring as a lieutenant colonel, he went on to fly for several private and commercial operators as an international captain, check airman, and chief pilot. His logbook includes the T-37B, T-38A, KC-135A, Boeing 707, Boeing 747, Challenger 604, and the Gulfstream III, IV, V, 450, and GVII. He is currently the chief pilot for a Gulfstream operator based in Massachusetts.

His website, www.code7700.com attracts three million hits each month and well over a thousand viewers each day. His articles have appeared in several magazines, most notably Business & Commercial Aviation.

He speaks on a broad range of aviation safety topics and his venues have included the Air Charter Safety Foundation, the Bombardier Safety Stand Down, and several airport and aircraft users group.

While he claims to be devoid of ego, that can hardly be true of someone willing to write a five volume set of flight lessons based on his own experiences.

A worthy successor to Flight Lessons 1: Basic Flight. AF Pilots will especially enjoy Mr. Albright's telling of his experiences dealing with the best and worst leadership (I only hope Lt Col Spindler, 9 ACCS/CC, is a pseudonym ) as he matured as a pilot, progressing from EC-135J copilot to evaluator pilot in short order and then transitioning to the E-4B (B747-200) and working his way up to functional check pilot. He explains how he found the best way learn for himself then provide disciplined instruction to his fellow pilots after having to learn receiver air refueling by osmosis and crew resource management from the good and bad examples around him. When confronted with missing, ambiguous, incorrect, or conflicting guidance or flying techniques, Mr. Albright uses his engineering background to determine a solution and shares it with the reader. For example, Mr. Albright uses geometry to show why using a landing aim point 500 from the threshold in a B747 is a bad idea and why the 1 ACCS is lucky they landed the E-4B in the over run only once. Entertaining to read, this book offers especially valuable insights for young and mid-career pilots.

We had a few similar rules of thumb in Navy fighters and now I’m really curious to dig into why ours worked while differing slightly to some in this book.

So, I find James approach in Flight Lessons 2 both entertaining and informative - much of the material is a review but, in this business you have to review periodically to stay competent. For those of you just starting out in aviation or those that haven't been reviewing manuals consistently; do yourself a favour and get these series of books for knowledge and inspiration. Also, visit the website periodically. You'll realize that a professional pilot requires continuous review of procedures that are always changing. You don't want to be saying "when did they change that..." in the air! Keep the blue side up.
