Big Button Universal Remote Works with TV, Cable, and Satellite
Seniors are watching the most TV out of any age group--over 200 hours per person per month, according to Nielson. But remotes are not designed for them. Flipper increases independence--and reduces caregiver time--by allowing the user to access their content when they want it. Gone are hundreds of useless channels, and midnight telephone calls asking for help.
Flipper works wall major TVs and cable / satellite set top boxes (STBs) with one remote. Flipper is preset to Motorola STBs, and many major TVs. Once set up, Flipper will power on/off both the TV and STB box, the channel buttons will control the STB, and the volume buttons will control your TV speakers. Flipper also works with a cable-ready TV.
Lock Your Settings in Place
Once your setup is complete, easily lock the settings in place. Locking Flipper deactivates the setup buttons to avoid reprogramming by accident. Locking is as simple as holding the ADD button until the light turns solid, then entering 955. The light blinks out, and Flipper is locked.

It took a bit to get programmed. I chose to take advantage of the "favorites" feature which locks you into I think about 30 channels. It's a long manual process. No bells and whistles. When I was done there were no more "you don't have this channel" messages for my mom to click through. And 30 or so channels is plenty of TV.
The usability is a bit Kludgy. This is due to my cable box and can't be blamed on the controller. The favorites feature sends a code with the next favorite channel followed by a carriage return character to the cable box. My cable box (Cablevision) does not support the carriage returrn so you have to patiently click and wait about 1.5 seconds for the channel to change. If you get frustrated and click several times, the remote will just send more numbers and the cable box will be trying to go to channel "2345" or something. I thought this would trip up mom but it did not.
The on off button is also kludgy. Sometimes it turns on the TV but not the cable box and sometimes vice-versa. Amazingly though, if you click it again it works. I can't explain this. My mind tells me it should fall into a pattern of TV=ON, Cable=OFF then TV=OFF, Cable=ON once you get into that bad situation. But...It doesn't. It fixes itself and I don't know why.
All this kludginess and 5 stars? Why? Because just like that old dodge dart. Once you get the hang of it's few quirks, it just plain works !
My mom complains about it every time I see her. But.... She uses it every day and she has not called me about a broken TV since I bought her this.
One last thing. I added a tiny screw to the slide-off cover that hides the programming buttons. It's a tiny screw - literally like 1/8" long. This keeps my mom from getting curious about what's inside and I'm sure has prevented her from breaking the programming.
Power, channel, sound and mute. That is it and the colors and shapes are big.
A sliding panel has all the setup buttons. Setup was easy and the senior loves it since she can't mess up the TV.
If you have ever driven a long distance to "fix" the TV for a senior that changed the input by mistake then this is a great device.
So what is so bad about this? They power button only sends a signal for as long as you push it. What this means is that a quick press of the power button may be sufficient to turn on the TV, but not a long enough signal to turn on the cable box. All it takes is a single incident of this and the TV and cable box are out of sync, then when the TV goes on the cable box goes off and vice versa. She has no idea what is wrong and just pushes the button over and over tuning one on and the other off. This needs to be improved to send a burst of a second or two every time the power button is pressed so that there is sufficient signal to make sure both devices are turned on or off at the same time.
This one has to go back...
The best part is that the cable box has no on/off so the box and TV cannot get out of sync. I have not programmed favorite channels yet, but for now it makes life easier.
