The major problem with this book - the reason I can't give it four stars - is that the author chose to make the heroine a college senior. Completely ruined an otherwise fairly tight and gripping plot. What would it have cost her to make the main character a young professional a few months out of school? It would have been much more believable. Last time I checked, interns in DC who also go to school don't also work 24/7 in a high level campaign. This girl never went to school or worked on papers. I know a little something about this - having worked on both the Hill and journalism for more than 20 years in DC. Also - the bar at the Hay Adams? It's in the basement, not on the main floor. Otherwise, a nice little story with a better than average plot. Nice ear for dialogue, too. Hero was a little too good to be true, even by the genre's standards - all in all, not a bad book but because it was fairly well written and had the opportunity to be so much better... I'm a little disappointed.

“Love plus org*sms did not equal happily ever after. Not with the obstacles we faced.”

Flirting with Scandal (stand-alone) follows student and part-time undercover gossip blogger Jacqueline Gardner, Jackie and former executive and aspiring politician William Andrew Clayton, Will.

She is the illegitimate child of a politician not looking to get mixed up with another official. While he is quite the opposite, emerging himself into politics in need of the perfect wife.

Add to that mind-blowing sex and a gossip column set on following his every move and you have the recipe for the perfect scandal…
“Jacqueline Gardner, this is William Clayton. He’s hired the firm to help out with his campaign. He’s running for a seat in the Virginia Senate.”

WILLIAM A. CLAYTON, Will: 26 years/Heir/Politician/Dark blond hair/Green eyes.
Five words to describe William Andrew Clayton, Will: Charming, noble, honest, commanding and sexy.

JACQUELINE GARDNER, Jackie: 21 years/Student/Intern/Blogger/Blond hair/Blue eyes.
Five words to describe Jacqueline Gardner, Jackie: Secretive, determined, private, flawed and independent.

Flirting with Scandal, told from dual POV is the perfect blend of sizzling sex, scandalous situations, romance and angst. I am happy with ending and extended epilogue a few months later.

Oh Will, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. Especially in NA romances these days it seems like the author feels compelled to give her male lead a tortured background, fractured family relationships, grudges against women, etc. Will, on the other hand was just a nice, normal, all-around great guy (albeit from a wealthy family) who proved that "nice guy" does not mean boring and that a guy doesn't have to be an alpha-hole, a player, or a bad boy to be unbearably attractive. He'd had a pretty easy life, but he wasn't afraid to work for what he wanted. He fell hard for Jackie from the minute he met her. He admired her smarts and her strength and wanted nothing more to support her. Jackie was keeping some pretty explosive secrets that could ruin both of them, but when Will found out, he didn't storm out like a spoiled brat, he talked to her and tried to show her that he was there for her regardless of what happened.

I really liked Jackie also. She did have the hard background, but she was determined to rise above it. She was smart, motivated, and loved her chosen profession. She tried to push Will away because she was afraid she would ruin him, but their gravitational pull toward each other was just too strong. My only criticism of the book was that Jackie's age made the story just a bit unrealistic. I really wish she would have been just a couple of years older and already graduated from college. Still, that's a minor quibble given how much I enjoyed the story and I would rate it 4.5 stars.

Lesson #1: In Washington, D.C., information is power, secrets are destructive and scandal is the fuel that the city runs on.

Growing up in the District of Columbia, Jackie Gardner learned all of the above early in life. Jackie is the result of an affair between a powerful and married senator and his mistress and was never acknowledged by her father. She has vowed to never get romantically involved with a politician, especially with her mother's history. Her mother is a political groupie, attracted to and always involved with powerful politicians without a care for their marital status. Until William Andrew Clayton.

Now a senior in college, Jackie is interning at a prestigious political consulting firm as a stepping stone to a career in political consulting. At the same time, she is working as an anonymous blogger for a tabloid blog. She meets Will at a bar one night and things get quite steamy between them until she discovers that he's on the fast track to a state senate seat.

To her surprise, Will has hired her firm to work with his campaign and she is assigned to his office. The both know that the smart thing to do would be to stay away from each other but the attraction between them is too compelling and they cannot resist each other. Stolen moments in the break room, smoldering gazes across the conference room table, all so risky that I was just waiting for them to get caught! Her worlds are colliding and she can't even find it in her to resist Will as he skillfully breaches all her defenses.

FLIRTING WITH SCANDAL is absolutely amazing. The trope is familiar but there's just something about the passion, the intensity, the heat that I could not get enough of. I am a politics and news junkie so I'm always interested in romances with politics in them.
