The stunningly vibrant final novel in the bestselling Ibis Trilogy from Amitav Ghosh, Flood of Fire.

It is 1839 and China has embargoed the trade of opium, yet too much is at stake in the lucrative business and the British Foreign Secretary has ordered the colonial government in India to assemble an expeditionary force for an attack to reinstate the trade. Among those consigned is Kesri Singh, a soldier in the army of the East India Company. He makes his way eastward on the
Hind, a transport ship that will carry him from Bengal to Hong Kong.

Along the way, many characters from the Ibis Trilogy come aboard, including Zachary Reid, a young American speculator in opium futures, and Shireen, the widow of an opium merchant whose mysterious death in China has compelled her to seek out his lost son. The
Hind docks in Hong Kong just as war breaks out and opium is “pouring into the market like monsoon flood.” From Bombay to Calcutta, from naval engagements to the decks of a hospital ship, among embezzlement, profiteering, and espionage, Amitav Ghosh’s Flood of Fire charts a breathless course through the culminating moment of the British opium trade and vexed colonial history.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Ghosh imbues his narrative with historical sweep and the lavish sights and sounds of southern Asia, beautifully dramatizing the rise of Hong Kong and the strained legacy of European colonialism.” ―O: The Oprah Magazine

“[
Flood of Fire] brims with wonderful historical details, clearly the result of prodigious research. . . . Ghosh has so much passion for his subject, so much care for his characters and such a command of his prose that readers will find it easy to surrender to the story.” ―Laila Lalami, The New York Times Book Review

Flood of Fire is, for my money, the best of the three volumes: It adds colorful threads to the plot, weaving them into the existing story and tying them off in a most satisfactory way. Further, the novel provides highly dramatic depictions of key land and sea battles of the First Opium War. Beyond that, it presents a savvy account of the influence of the opium lobby on British foreign policy and the mental contortions of the "Apostles of Liberty" who identified the diabolical trade, so destructive of the people of both India and China, with freedom, commercial righteousness and religious enlightenment - all virtuously bestowed with guns and gunboats.” ―Katherine A. Powers, Chicago Tribune

“[Combines] a historian's affection for the archive with an anthropologist's appreciation of the thickness of local realities and a novelist's gift for plot, character, and language . . . Ghosh fashions a history that seems always on the move, vibrantly and restlessly progressing toward its conclusion.” ―
Bookforum

“A writer of uncommon talent who combines literary flair with a rare seriousness of purpose . . . His descriptions bring a lost world to life.” ―
The Washington Post Book World

“Dashing . . . This novel unfolds like those paper landscapes that expand under water: Each character, each situation, expands into its own world. All are woven into a four-dimensional tapestry depicting the explosive force of cultural exchange driven by the immense wealth to be derived from unchained desire.” ―Ann Klefstad,
Minneapolis Star Tribune

“The [Ibis Trilogy] books are not only operatic-big personalities, lots of drama-but a compelling and vividly imagined chronicling of the height of British colonialism, and the development of modern Asia.” ―Hanya Yanagihara, author of A Little Life,
Harper's Bazaar

“A writer of supreme skill and intelligence
.” ―The Atlantic Monthly

I feel honored and privileged to have read the Ibis trilogy. The first two books were harder for me, they took more focus and re-reading of certain sentences and sequences. But perhaps reading Amitav Ghosh is a bit of a learned skill, something you get better at and enjoy more the more you experience it. I give the series my highest rating and walk away with that ultra fond and somewhat sad feeling in my gut that it is over.

Flood of Fire turns an interesting bit of the history of the opium trade in China and China's relationship to the British merchants and government in the 1830s to 40s, into a profound and scary revelation of the power of both greed and addiction caused by opiates. We learn through several of the characters that the addiction to opium takes two forms, the actual users of opium, perhaps less addicted than those who push the sale of it and then live on its huge profits. The attack of the British Navy and Marines on the Chinese is very similar to other holocausts. But it didn't seem to me that the author was preaching or crying. He just wanted to make sure that we knew what happened and why.

But it's the individual characters and their stories that make the book immensely readable and enjoyable. There are several nice romances, there always has to be a little adultery, doesn't there? How about murder, injustice, the strong beating the weak, the arrogance of the wealthy and the captain who can't be bribed? There is a little section about the problems of onanism and certain addictions and cures and pamphlets of the time telling of this particular problem that I found absolutely hilarious. Some of you may need to read that part quickly.

Two of the primary characters have never tried opium and the descriptions of their experiences with it were top notch.

In the end, there is heartbreak, death, a few hopeful situations and several more stories to be told. But a realistic story, well told and a better feeling to the whole region including the story of how Hong Kong became part of Great Britain.

Ghosh, don't feel obligated to stop because you called it a trilogy. Let's keep this going. In about a year, I'm going to re-read the whole trilogy and enjoy it again. I can't wait to hear what you think.

With this book, Amitav ends a long story. It would be a tad unfair to say it is a story. With the kind of research behind the stories, it reads more like a historical chronicle tied together by some characters. Only if such books were available in my schooling days, history would have been so much more interesting.

The trilogy gives a very good understanding of the commercial agenda of the East India Company and the colonial outlook of British in the first half of 19th century. The beauty of Amitav’s writing is that he is able to bring out quite an impartial narrative, due to which it is difficult for the reader to take any particular side in the warring factions. Yes, as Indian (and maybe for Chinese) , the trilogy is a painful reminder of the past and the various things that went wrong. But, as the cliché goes, those who forget history are condemned to repeat it. So, it is important to treasure the learnings from history.

In the “Sea of Poppies”, Amitav introduced the characters, Deeti, Neel, Zachary, Ah Fatt, Serang Ali and Kalua and how their different lives got enmeshed in the Ibis. And it brought to the readers the background of opium trading, which was quite a driver for British Occupation into India. “River of Smoke” was quite a digression for me, as it largely focused on the market side - opium trade into China and the diabolical approach of British in this entire trade. In the final version, all the scattered characters of Ibis come together, once again in Ibis. And we have a ringside view of the opium war , with the various characters finding themselves on warring sides by force of destiny and the creation of HongKong. I was a bit disappointed that Deeti was not so much visible in the final part.

Quite unlike the first two parts of the trilogy, Amitav has made “Flood of Fire” quite a racy read. It had me quite hooked on at various parts and was difficult to put down. And that is the genius of Amitav, to make a reader hooked on to history. And the details are amazing – one can only feel humbled by the tons of research which would have gone behind writing the trilogy.

Having said all this, “The Hungry Tide” will continue to have a special place in heart. Flood of Fire is great, but still short of The Hungry Tide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read and I learned a lot
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 16, 2023
This is the last book in a Trilogy and, in some respects, my favourite of the three in the way the author injected humour into some of the characters. I knew nothing about the Opium Wars and it seems much of the book is based on eye witness accounts and real transcripts of events that occurred at that time so, it is fascinating. Loved the characters, in fact just thoroughly enjoyed getting immersed in the whole series. There is history, comedy, plant history, a few battles (didn't enjoy those bits so much), romance, intrigue, a brilliant read - once you get past the first couple of chapters. Love Amtav Ghosh, he is a wonderful author and observer of human traits. Plus I loved the fact that I could follow the characters through the three books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A historical documentation wrapped in a marverllous novel
Reviewed in Germany on May 3, 2017
The book is the third part of Gosh's triology on the first opium war and its social and political impact in India and China. The work is a historical research embedded in a novel (or maybe a novel embedded in an historical research). There is few mention of the opium war in Western literature and historical productions and that makes this trilogy even more important. A must-read

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EPIC FINALE! AWESOME BOOK!
Reviewed in India on January 6, 2016
I have just finished reading Flood of Fire by Amitav Ghosh. I was reading Jibananda Das’ poems and abandoned it halfway in my excitement to finish the last book in the Ibis trilogy. It took me more than 3 weeks to finish reading this book!

I loved reading all the three books in the Ibis Trilogy. Reading Flood of Fire has been a true revelation in the sense there is much to admire in this one that I feel honored and privileged to have read all these books. In the background of Opium Wars, the characters such as Zachary Reid, Neel, Kesri, Shireen, and never to forget Mrs. Burnham, have made thrilling stories of their lives tied together by the Ibis ship. Altogether, Flood of Fire is a fitting finale to a glorious expedition of the author Amitav Ghosh’s writing about the Opium Wars. I strongly recommend the book.
