Editorial Reviews

A rain-swollen lake. A small town dependent on fishing revenues. A rivulet of water seeping through the rocks beneath an earthen dam. These are the suspense-generating ingredients of this onrushing, all-star Irwin Allen production.

A helicopter pilot (Robert Culp) and a youngster (Eric Olson) first discover the dam's leaky secret. But local leaders refuse to face the drain on the town's troubled economy that draining the lake would cause. A high-and-dry solution is not in the cards.

Martin Milner, Barbara Hershey, Richard Basehart, Cameron Mitchell, Teresa Wright and two stars of Allen's smash The Poseidon Adventure, Carol Lynley and Roddy McDowall, all try to keep afloat when the wall of water hits and the special effects kick into high gear. Take a dive into the raging currents of this topflight adventure.

Although not as compelling or as large scale as his 1972 blockbuster, "The Poseidon Adventure", this Irwin Allen television movie is quite entertaining and has some decent special effects. The cast is good especially martin Milner and Barbara Hershley. Roddy McDowall and Carol Lynley, both stars of "The Poseidon Adventure" prove to be water disaster pro's by turning in good solid supporting performances. Again, "Flood!" won't win any Emmy's but it will entertain you and that is what Irwin Allen does best.

Just like Irwin Allen's other all-star made for t.v. disaster movie FIRE,FLOOD is an exciting, action packed thrill ride! The characters
are interesting and well-developed,unlike most of today's summer blockbusters. And since the movie is made for television, the special
effects are quite impressive for that era!And with only one curse
word in the entire film,NO WONDER THEY WON'T SHOW ANYTHING LIKE
THIS ON T.V. ANYMORE!

This made for television disaster flick is heavy on melodrama, light on any real action/disaster (the event in question happens at night!!! In the dark!!! Where very little of anything can be seen!!!). And it should be noted that Roddy McDowall's appearance is limited to the first few minutes. He shows up briefly as a fisherman to prove the town is desperate to keep their fishing lake intact, come hell or high water. (If he was the sole support of this vacation paradise, yikes!) The plot involves said lake and the town's reliance on it for their livelihood. The dam that's supposed to be keeping said lake in place is springing leaks every hour on the hour. Richard Basehart plays the town's treacherous mayor, willing to do anything to keep people from learning about the peril they're facing. He makes poor Cameron Mitchell do all the dirty work patching the dam, for all the good it does. Martin Milner plays the one and only rational person in the town, willing to question the mayor's lies, in spite of the fact that he's engaged to the mayor's dead pan daughter (played like a zombie by Barbara Hershey). Teresa Wright plays the mayor's longsuffering wife. Other notables in the cast are Whit Bissell as Dr. Horne, Gloria Stuart as Mrs. Parker, Robert Culp as Steve Brannigan, and Carol Lynley (overacting as though she was working it for two people).

The best part of this movie is watching Richard Basehart's chilling performance as a sanctimonious liar willing to let the whole town drown just to prove he's right, even when he knows he isn't. His scenes with Martin Milner are fabulous.

It's a likable movie but it's not a great one. Still, I'm glad I got it for my collection.

I already have this movie on VHS. It's a good "disaster" movie with an all star cast. But over the years, I've watched the VHS one so many times that it's wearing out. So I bought it on DVD. Hopefully, it will last even longer. I would definitely recommend it.

Typical Irwin Allen fare. Story okay, acting okay. My biggest gripe is that they never showed the dam. They showed a slope with water squirting out, and they showed water lapping the edge of a pool or something in the rain, but they never backed up and showed a lake held back by a dam. When the dam actually broke, I was looking at a black screen and listening to people yell while they played rumbling and rain noises.

Producer / disaster movie mega-god, Irwin Allen (THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE TOWERING INFERNO, THE SWARM) takes his formula to the small screen w/ FLOOD!. As the title implies, a town is endangered by a potential wall of water, caused by a crumbling dam. COLUMBO regular, Robert Culp (A NAME FOR EVIL) plays helicopter pilot, Steve Brannigan, who first discovers the problems w/ the leaky dam. When he tells town trouble-maker, Paul Burke (Martin Milner), the true magnitude of the situation begins to emerge. Burke contacts an engineer, then takes what he learns to the town council. Unsurprisingly, the council, led by Mayor John Cutler (Richard Basehart), strongly disagrees. Their decision to do nothing has a lot to do w/ their big fishing industry, which depends on the dam to exist. In typical Allen fashion, the "tension" builds slooowwly, while the various characters bicker, and the dam continues to decay. Disaster films are actually monster movies, w/ fires, floods, and other natural calamities filling in for the monsters. This one takes an eternity to get going, making 90+ minutes seem like sitting on a hot stove! FLOOD! isn't terrible for a 70's made-for-TV epic, but it does take its sweet old time getting anywhere! When the water finally breaks loose, you just may be in dreamland. Co-stars Roddy McDowall (PLANET OF THE APES, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE), Cameron Mitchell (FLIGHT TO MARS, THE TOOLBOX MURDERS, THE DEMON), Carol Lynley (BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING, THE SHUTTERED ROOM, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, BEWARE! THE BLOB!) as an unnaturally huge pregnant woman, and Barbara Hershey (BOXCAR BERTHA, THE ENTITY) as an impossibly hot nurse. Also, watch for young Leif Garrett (DEVIL TIMES FIVE, MACON COUNTY LINE) before his teen heart-throb days!...
