This cleartex one however. Very soft. I've only had it for a few days and already there is heavy indents where the casters sit. I have stiff lowpile carpet 1/4" thick and the claws on this mat are only 1/8" long. It can actually move around. For reference, I weight at 175lbs. The indents are so severe that I have a hard time moving the chair around on it. When I push the chair forward, it will roll backward. Avoid this.
My roommate has the ikea kolon floor protector that is the same thickness (2mm") but is much stiffer and while it still buckles, its much more usable.
That being said, the Cleartex AdvantageMat PVC Chair Mat for low pile carpets up to ¼" thick pretty much lives up to the product description. It is clear, does measure about 48 x 36 inches in size and it is rectangular, and if that lip means the tongue portion that sticks under the desk, it has one of those as well.
Bought this to go with a new Flash Furniture Mid-Back Black Mesh Task and Computer Chair, as I was worried about the caster wheels chewing up the carpet. It works well for that purpose with a uniform short pile carpet. If your carpet pile measures any deeper than ¼", you might want to consider another mat, like the Cleartex UltiMat Polycarbonate Chair Mat for Plush Pile Carpets More Than 1/2 Inch Thick.
This Cleartex AdvantageMat is a decent chair mat, and so far it's staying in place, though that will be better determined in six months of use. It's worth the price, does its job as expected and seems to be made of a sturdy PVC material.
It did get indentations but they were small and I didn't find them to be a major problem
It slid a little but I only had to move it back into position every two or three months; not a major problem
Now here's the major problem: I purchased this mat in March of 2012. It is now October 2013 and the mat is cracking badly. I will have to throw it away. My point is that I think it is a very good mat, but don't expect it to last more than 18 months. I don't consider that to be long enough, that's a "dealbreaker," so I won't buy another one. I've heard that polycarbonate ones don't crack, but I'll bet they are much more expensive. I'll check that out. As for you, I hope that I have helped and . . .Good luck in your search!
My other issue is that they seem rather thin, it is only slightly easier to roll my chair around on the mat than it was on bare carpet. I think if they were a bit more rigid this issue would go away. The mat also seems to move around more than I would expect--I have to re-position it every day. They do protect the carpet, so I don't hate them completely but still was rather disappointed.
Update: After filling out a shipping review Amazon was VERY quick to respond with a solution. They immediately shipped another mat to replace the damaged one. They supplied the return shipping label that I affixed to the new box for return. The new mat was rolled the proper direction which makes it possible to flatten out.
That said, the mat is VERY thin. You can actually feel the gripping spikes from underneath as you roll your chair. Our carpet is a very dense low pile commercial grade. It may become less noticeable as it settles into the carpet.
