Sparely illustrated, its full-spread white backgrounds with delicate pink-blossom borders emphasize the actions of the two protagonists. A lone flamingo lands onto the nearly blank expanse of the title page. Soon, it is joined by little Flora, who provides a sweetly round counterpoint to the angular bird. She furtively imitates the flamingo's moves with utmost concentration and extremely comical poses until it catches on and squawks angrily, driving her away in a sulk. Friendship triumphs in the end, and the unlikely couple dance together and joyously cannonball into water on the last double foldout page. As neither flamingos nor little girls are known for their inherent elegance, the duo's surprisingly graceful moves are reminiscent of dancing hippos and ostriches from Disney's Fantasia. About the Author

Molly Idle began her career as an artist working for DreamWorks Feature Animation, and from there she leapt into the world of children's books. She is the author and illustrator of the Caldecott Honor-winning picture book Flora and the Flamingo, and all of the books about Flora and her fine feathered friends, as well as the dazzling mermaid tale, Pearl. She’s also the creator of the Rex series which includes Tea Rex and Sea Rex, and the illustrator of People Don’t Bite People. She lives in Tempe, Arizona.

This is a beautifully crafted book that inspires a child's imagination. Almost every child likes to dance, to move through the air with feet flowing and hands waving with a big smile on their faces. What fun to be free to move.

The author, Molly Idle, has provided a book full of images in pinks and yellows and some black and grey. This is a book without words, that allows the child's imagination to run free. Flora, a little girl and a Flamingo meet in dance. The Flamingo strikes poses and so does Flora. As you turn the page, there is a drop down strip that shows the poses the Flamingo and Flora are making. The illustrations are alive, colorful and vivid depicting each pose, each expression as it takes place. Once your children understand the purpose of the book, they will want to try and strike the same pose. This is a great deal of fun watching children make their own interpretation. This book is not just for girls who like ballet, but every child who uses their imagination. And, the parents will have fun joining in. Imagine the big strapping father striking the poses that Flora and the Flamingo make. What a guy! What great fun!

I gave this book to my four year old granddaughter after her first ballet recital. She was so excited to strike the Pisces she remembered and the new poses she found in the book. I have a feeling the entire family will soon be striking poses throughout the house!

I wish I would have payed more attention- as I did not realize this was Lift-The-Flap, paper flaps tear too easily IMO and I usually avoid. When I was a little girl I took ballet. I loved the grace, the extensions, the leaps. I looked in the mirror and saw long limbs, arches where they should be, strength and grace. It was a wonderful time of my life and I wanted so badly to be a dancer. The mirror reflect a pudgy, dimpled little girl. Short arms and legs, clumsy and awkward. But that didn't matter, I formed a life long love of the art that I shared with both my Mother and sons. I think I looked a bit like Flora. Flora and Flamingo unfold like a silent movie, deep and beautiful. The two unlike dancers mirror each other in a synchronized partnership from the graceful to the absurd. Handy pull out flaps tell a story of companionship, friendship and a bit of healthy competition. A lovely book, it is a welcome addition to my own library. Flora and the Flamingo tell the story that anyone can be a dancer- grace like beauty comes from within. As my granddaughters take their own first ballet lesson, they will each get their own!!

My favorite Flora's book. Illustration are amazing, so gentle, flowerish. My 2yo daughter wants to 'read' again and again, she keeps bringing it at every occasion we read books. Also other Flora books.
Beside nice illustrations, I like the stories from Flora's collection a lot. I would describe each of them by main subject (my opinion) - with flamingos is about making friends and trying to come closer by imitating. With penguin is about hurt feelings because of discarting present and fixing what is done after. (Very nice book about friendship) And with peacocks is about non-acceptance of what is different than us and fixing what is done and cheering up after hurting somebody.
Also - with flamingos would recommend for ballet lovers, with penguin for figure-dancing lovers and with peacocks for somehow jappanesse style dance with hand fan.
