100% germination two years in a row

This will be my second year using these plugs with !00% germination both times. I have used these for tomatoes, peppers, basil and cuccumbers with 100% success. I start by putting these in the 10x20 trays that hold 72 plugs then I will fill the tray half full of clean tap water and let sit for 30 minutes. They I will remove the plug tray from the base tray and dump out all the water that wasn't absorbed by the plugs and replace the plug tray in the base tray. Then I place two seeds per plug about 1/4 inch into the pre-existing hole in the top. Next I cover the tray with a clear plastic dome and place them on a heating mat. The importance of this can not be over stated. Per gardening expert after expert it is crutial that your seeds be between 80-85 degress to germinate. Then finally I place a single T5 flurescent light fixture about 12 inches over the tray on a 16h on/ 8h off schedule. Every couple of day when the plugs start to lighten in color (dark brown when wet, light brown when dry) I will repeat the watering process as above. After the sprouts are about 1 1/2 - 2 inches tall I will remove the cover and heating mat and lower the light to 1/2 inch about the tallest sprout. One other thing I want to mention is that do to the fact that I have 100% germination I have to remove one of the sprouts which I do when they are 2 inches tall. I will definitly use these again in the future. Hope my review helped.

Works better than rockwhool

I've used both these types of plugs and Rockwool to make clones and these seem to work better than Rockwool. Feel like the directions for using Rockwool makes them too wet so cuttings don't want to grow roots looking for water they just soak up water through their cut stems. These types of plugs come already damp and ready to use for the most part. The rapid rooter brand ones come a little damper and thus are ready to go out of the package. I just put my cuttings into them with rooting gel and spray them with PHed water. I will water the actual plugs after about 2 days.

With these Flora root plugs. I put about a cup of water into the bag and leave it closed out in the sun for the day. This will evaporate the water and even it out between all the plugs. Then I plant them as a normally would with the rapid rooters. These are a lot better deal and I'll most likely continue getting these because they're basically exactly the same for a better price.

Be a master grower

Turn your black thumb into a green thumb. Impress your friends and family with your skill at starting seeds. Really, these take out all the hard work. Stop buying potted plants at the store and go seeds only, the Root Riots are the only way to go.

Couple of points:

-You don't need a fancy tray to use these. I've used the 50 spot tray, cup, shot glass, saucer and more to start seeds. As long as the plugs are somewhat upright, you're golden.

-They only need to be sitting in about a 1/4" of water, though I've had it half way to barely anything and everything works.

-My preferred way to use these is putting the plugs directly in soil with the seed inside. I no longer start them in a cup of water. I find the roots are stronger when they establish from the plugs into the soil. And no issues of damping off, unless you have really rocky soil. Plus, your soil can start feeding the roots making the plant grow faster.

-I've used them on all kinds of veggies. I used to use two seeds in a hole, now only one. Germination is that high.

-Big seeds like squash and whatnot don't go in the plugs, they're too big (and, honestly, squash germinates incredibly easily anyway). Don't try an avocado pit, it won't fit. Tomato, greens, etc. are perfect for these.

-Works for cuttings as well. I push fig cuttings into the holes and they work great. With tomatoes, use a chopstick to open up the hole before inserting the stem cutting and you're golden.

-I used Rapid Rooters before these and they appear to be identical, save for whatever proprietary magic potion they put on them. I'm not sure if it's chemicals or willow bark extract or what, but they all seem to work just fine.

Flora Plugs really work well

I'm a pretty new gardener and decided to give these a shot for my first seedlings and cuttings.

Used for seeds, I simply turned these plugs over, made a small hole with a hemostat ('cause that's how Nurses roll), and inserted one seed per plug. I used an upside down tupperware for the "dome" which worked well (100% germ rate). Many ways to do this, but that was mine and it worked great.

For cuttings, I have been using Clonex and these plugs in a rooter tray. I like the plugs for this as well as the Clonex, but I'm trying to rid my garden of both. The Clonex isn't organic, and these seem handy but maybe an unnecessary expense. I'm still playing with things to see what works and if I can nail down a better option I'll share it, but as of right now, these plugs are pretty much the bomb-dot-com.

Also, I have tried those expanding puck things with the netting around them, and they were horrible in my experience. As a new gardener, these were WAY easier to use and provided MUCH better results. I'm still trying to phase them out, but it's not because I don't like them or they don't work, I'm just cheap!
