About the author

Jon H. Gutmacher is a retired Florida attorney with over forty years of criminal trial experience, and some 200 jury trials as lead counsel, including death penalty. His practice was devoted largely to firearm, weapon, and self defense cases, although he did successfully handle a large number of police liability cases as a plaintiff's attorney. His experience includes being a Florida prosecutor, police legal advisor, Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL), as well as being both an NRA certified firearms instructor, and NRA Refuse to be a Victim instructor. He is regarded by many as the foremost authority on legal issues involving firearms, weapons, and self defense in Florida, and remains very active in writing about his subject. His printed version book, "Florida Firearms -- Law, Use & Ownership" has sold over a quarter million copies, is often referred to as the "bible" on Florida firearm laws. The newest version, the "GOLD EDITION" was recently released in July 2022. The printed book is updated in print once yearly, usually in July, and covers almost all laws, Florida & Federal, related to firearms, weapons, and self defense (except hunting), and is also updated free on his website with reference to any new laws, or cases that materially affect the book.
Besides his legal expertise, Mr. Gutmacher is also a well known narrative poet. His narrative poetry website is often ranked #1 in the nation by Google for fantasy poetry, and he often cooperates with Marshal T. Justice on western cowboy poetry, serving as editor for Marshal's books. Marshal's new book, "The Old West & Times Gone By" is available on Amazon both in print and an Ebook version. An earlier fantasy poetry work of Mr. Gutmacher, "Fantasy, Dreams, Battles, & Magic" is scheduled for reissue on Amazon as an Ebook in the near future.

Gutmacher presents very understandable, yet critical information for Florida gun owners. He does it in a very entertaining and readable way. If you are even considering getting a concealed carry permit, this book is an absolute MUST. As important as having reliable ammunition. Because this book is ammunition. It's information you really won't find as condensed and accessible anywhere else.
You can read it cover to cover as I did. You can also use it a reference by jumping to the sections applicable to your needs.
Gutmacher provides free updates on his website, so you don't have to worry about buying the book today and it being outdated tomorrow. I even hear he responds to emails readers send him with questions about legal matters relevant to FL gun laws. What a guy!
I can't think of any negatives to mention, except for that at the time of this review I don't see anyone selling it on Amazon at a reasonable price. I see it at gun shops and gun shows all the time for $25-$30. I paid a bit more than that online, but no complaints here.
I sent Jon an email to get some clarification on an issue i wasn't sure about and he responded very fast with an answer. I'm very happy with the purchase and 30 bucks is well worth it for this book.
I could go on forever. Just buy it, read it, and help educate others who are too lazy to do it themselves. A great present idea.
I only wish it had more footnotes and vignettes for real life cases he has been involved in. Tell us what usually happens when an otherwise law abiding citizen gets jammed up on some 5yr Federal firearms charge. What usually happens? Pay a fine, charge reduced, etc. Perhaps I am just naive but my intuition tells me that there is still a reasonable standard filter at the level of the DA or federal prosecutor who is not going to waste his limited resources on such a trivial matter. You could call the supplement: True Stories in as a Gun Lawyer.
If you fire a warning shot, you are not in fear for your life. Therefore, discharging your weapon is illegal.
You have a right to bear arms but you have a duty to yourself, your family, & your community to understand the laws governing the use of firearms.
This book is expensive because it is printed in small runs. It must be updated often as laws are amended or implemented, and as new precedents are set.
The author is an attorney and, for a law book (essentially), it is a good read.
DO NOT buy older editions for your education. Make sure the 8th Edition isn't out before you buy this one.
I recommend this book highly.
