About the Author

Sheila Simmons is passionate about cooking and cookbooks. In her travels, when people come to stay at her rambling house in the country, when entertaining, and especially when attending church events, the subject will always, eventually, turn to recipes. In 2006, she left her Associate Publisher position at Quail Ridge Press (Brandon, MS) to focus her passion on Great American Publishers where she is Publisher and coowner along with husband Roger Simmons. Sheila is also coauthor of the STATE HOMETOWN COOKBOOK SERIES, author of Kitchen Memories Cookbook, and Children's Director for Mt Pisgah Baptist Church (Brandon, MS). She lives in Lena, Mississippi with her husband Roger and son Nicholas. Her firstborn son, Ryan, lives close-by with his wife, Shelbie and Sheila s first grandchild, Trace Warner Williams. In addition to publishing, cooking, and collecting recipes, Sheila enjoys spending time with family, reading, collecting first-edition books, and classic cars. Kent Whitaker has taken his down-home, Southern-style cooking to an art-form. "I like to do a bit more than burgers and dogs on the grill." He is the author and co-author of eight cookbooks, three history books, and two books for children which he wrote and illustrated. His co-authored books with Shelia Simmons include the Tennessee Hometown Cookbook, the Texas Hometown Cookbook, the Georgia Hometown Cookbook, the Mississippi Hometown Cookbook, the Louisiana Hometown Cookbook, and the South Carolina Hometown Cookbook(Great American Publishers.) His love of barbecue, grilling and tailgating are showcased in Smoke in the Mountains - the Art of Appalachian Barbecue and Checkered Flag Cooking - Tailgating Stock Car Racing (Quail Ridge Press.) Kent has also written three history books, one of which is a culinary history of WWII. These books include Bullets and Bread (History Publishing Co.) The USS Alabama, and Talladega Superspeedway (Arcadia Publishing.) He has also written and illustrated two children's books, Why are the Mountains Smoky? (Overmountain Press) and Big Mo's Tennis Ball Hunt (Great American Publishers) Kent has appeared on the Food Network and other network television stations, has hosted cooking classes at the Chattanooga Market and throughout the South. He writes a cooking column for the Chattanoogan and writes monthly articles for The National Barbecue News. He also hosts a short format radio show heard on over 60 stations across the country. A dog-lover and advocate for local animal shelters and rescue organizations, Kent and his grilling buddy, Moses, are spokesperson and spokesdog for ALPO®. Kent and Moses travel the country presenting grilling and cooking demos promoting the idea of including your canine family members in on the backyard grilling fun. Kent gives human grilling and cooking tips while Moses enjoys ALPO® Chop House Originals Ribeye-Flavored dog food. Kent and his wife Ally live in East Tennessee with one son, Macee, a Golden Retriever named Moses and a Shitzu named Lucy.

    I like to collect cookbooks and have a variety of them. I was pleased with this one. For one thing, there are lovely color photos throughout it. It’s a bummer when cookbooks don’t have enough pictures of the recipes. Not here.

    The book is a compilation of recipes from people all over Florida as well as from food organizations. Each recipe is credited. Examples include Orange Chicken, from the Florida Orange Groves Winery in St. Petersburg (recipe has orange wine in it). There are recipes in every food category. The seafood chapter for instance, offers shrimp, oysters and frogs legs dishes.

    There are also write-ups of annual cooking events and festivals thrown in. Examples are a seafood festival in Marathon in March; an oyster cook-off in Apalachicola just prior to Martin Luther King Jr Day in mid-January; as well as a chili cook-off in Orlando in February. An enjoyable book where you can also learn about Floridian culinary culture.

    Just got it yesterday, so I haven't used it yet. But I HAVE gone through it thoroughly. The recipes look uncomplicated but very good! As a lifelong Floridian, I thought I'd tried everything when it comes to Florida cooking, but this very attractive book has lots of recipes I'd never seen before and I'm dying to try them all!
