Following "Irene", we determined that our primary sump pump had failed. Went down to the orange big-box hardware store (sorry Amazon, but I needed it that day).
Installation would have been pretty easy, except I have a complicated set-up. I also have a back-up water powered (venturi) pump and the lid to the pit is sealed up. So, I had to wrestle all of the parts and various hook-ups.
As one big piece of advice, make sure the float moves freely. If you happen to block the movement, as I did, then the pump will not run.
Once all connected however, this pump moves water and fast. We emptied the sump pit in about 10 seconds. One big whoosh and the water was gone.
I am pretty impressed so far.
UPDATE APRIL 2014
Float is broken. Have a Liberty backup pump with a steel cover - as mentioned above - so taking the whole thing apart requires about an hour.
Once I had open access to the pump, it kicks on when I lift the float in the air. When I fill the basin with water though, nada. So the backup pump is keeping me dry. Looking at a competitive site (with the words "sump pumps" in the URL) and Amazon, I saw that Liberty sump pumps all have five star ratings. Every size, every configuration, right across the board. So I got a new 457, half hp with a vertical float. Bought elsewhere due to a significant price difference.
Thus, very unhappy with the Flotec pump. Poorest possible recommendation.
