I bought this because I got tired of killing plants by forgetting to water.

Intial set up was fairly simple - attached solar-powered pump unit to a post and dropped the intake end into the rain barrel.

Running the tubing was interesting, it made me look at my porch and how I placed my plants. I quickly got frustrated with the stiff tubing and t-connectors. Went to Lowes for better quality tubing and connectors. Had a lot of fun running tubing and placing plants after that.

After a month my plants are thriving and I'm thinking about a second unit for my back porch and wondering how imaginative I can get with this system. Can it be used in a bird bath or a small water feature?

This may not be the right unit for a Master Gardener - but for a Brown Thumb like myself it's a great way to learn and has made having plants fun again. As long as the unit holds up all year, I'll be very pleased with it.

Update - Unit is still running 6/8/2016 - bought new batteries for it this spring. A couple emitters have gotten chewed by my pets. A couple have gotten clogged, but I never thought it would last FIVE seasons! This is a good buy for someone like me who just wants a couple pots of flowers and herbs. I had the max number of emitters in use the last few seasons.

7/20/2016 - Bought a second unit and had trouble getting the in and out lines to seal. It took several days of fiddling to get it to seal tight. It filled the box with water twice. (I can see why other people got frustrated and quit.) But my battered first unit is watering my strawberries, so I needed to get the new one working before my flowers died.

The tubes have to be stretched before they will go on, and the tube has to be cut 100% flat.

We bought this for our outdoor plants before we disappeared for a week to a vacation. At that time, weather here was dry and hot and no rain was forecast for the whole week, so we needed to provide the plants with some water.
The watering system worked as it should - when we came back, the plants were alive and looked rather well.
Set-up of the system is very easy, but due to the limited length of the water hose, you either need to compile your plants within the reach of this unit, or you have to buy more than one unit.
Our plants that needed the week long water treatment are all moveable, so we clustered them in an area of approximately 5 by 5 feet directly adjacent to the solar unit, which we attached to a rain pipe with the provided plastic bands.
Of course, being solar powered, it is paramount that the unit has access to sunlight, but in pour case this was only true for maybe four hours a day in the afternoon. Still, this and the rechargeable batteries you need to put in (not provided!) kept the unit going.
Another consideration is the flow rate of the water, which can be chosen variably. But the more water you let flow through the system, the bigger your tank has to be. Not everybody has a 50 gallon drum readily available, and we eventually had to settle for an old 20 gallon plastic container. we set the flow rate to a very low level and calculated that this would do the trick. It did. When we came back, the container was only half empty and our precious hibiscus and the other plants were in great shape.
So, this is certainly not a 1-2-3 solution - it needs a bit planning and preparation with placement, water supply and flow rate, but once you have figured it all out, it works perfectly.

Overview:
I bought this so that I could use it with my rain barrel and eliminate the need to water my plants every day. The setup took me probably a little over an hour to do... mostly because the instructions were horrible, in my opinion. What the instructions don't really do a good job of explaining is that you have to cap the end of each drip point (t adapter) with a short snippet of hose and one of the drippers that are included. At first when I had everything setup I thought I must have done something wrong because water was not coming out of the t adapters at all but when I looked at the parts I had left, I didn't really know what the round things were that came in the box. After inspecting further I decided to add a snippet of hose and attach the round things to each drip point and all of the sudden everything started working! I don't know if it is just me, but the instructions included were HORRIBLE... they should have included more real pictures rather than diagrams with how to set this thing up. For something that should be no more than a 20 minute job this took me over an hour... I consider myself pretty handy when it comes to things around the house and putting things together but this thing was just plain bad when it came to instructions.

Pros:
- No more daily watering!!! Just look at the plants from time to time to see if it looks like they need additional watering!

Cons:
- VERY POOR instruction manual...
- Hard to know exactly if it's actually working unless you happen to go outside when it's running

Conclusion:
Overall, I'm happy with how well this thing works.
