Previously (two years ago) I used Rosetta Stone (Italian) and found that after completing the first level I could not think of much that I had learned. This of course killed most of my motivation to continue on with it (I did not finish it), as I was not getting any positive feedback from my efforts.
I point this out as my main reason why I like this program. I do feel as though I have been progressively learning to speak, read, and write the language. I normally look forward to the next lessons, and to making progress on reducing my learning curve.
So far as specific aspects of the program I like, I would have to say the most important one is being able to hear the recorded speaking portions of the lessons as you go. This helps me a lot with pronunciation, as I'm sure you already know. For me, being 59 years old, I know how best I learn something by now; which is through repetition. I know I will not fully comprehend the lesson on the first pass. Normally I go through each lesson at least three times. By the third run my brain seems to have absorbed the information and my practice with the pronunciation reaches an acceptable level.
The other aspect I certainly appreciate is the amount of work put into developing the lessons plans themselves. I appreciate the approach taken, versus some other conventional "must learn everything" approach. For home courses like these I think it is so critical that the user gets some positive feedback along the way to help keep them motivated to continue, and this program has done that very well so far.
I have also used the Flashcards quite a bit, and find them to be useful tools in developing better pronunciation and the reputition helps me with memorizing the grammar.
The only part of the program I would point out negatively so far is the part where you can record your speech as part of the previously presented conversation. I tried this and found it to not be useful at this point, because there was always a long paused before my recorded part came on, and again it just did not seem to provide me with some useful learning/feedback. I do assume that this feature may be more useful later on in the course, so I'm not writing it off just yet, as I may not be using it correctly (as intended).
I do want to say that I am very happy with the program so far, and am looking forward to learning more French. I will definitely be recommending this program to anyone I know who is interested in learning a language.
I learn best by understanding structure, not memorizing words and phrases, and this program teaches French language structure by comparing and contrasting to English language structure, e.g., it first presents a literal translation of each word, maps the structure to English, then explains the true idiomatic meaning.
I meant only to learn to understand and speak, but this program is helping me write/spell as well, an amazing feat since I can't spell in English (unless - wait for it - I understand the root/structure of the word).
I tend not to believe reviews that are one-sided, but I have found nothing negative yet about this program, and have been using it for a year.
(I also use learnfrenchbypodcast to supplement my French language understanding/acquisition.)
Lastly, the company's support is nothing short of awesome - with very fast, helpful responses to email queries.
