The F5 monitors not only sound great playing your favorite music files, they are extremely functional for mixing and more importantly, creating a mix that will translate to your car, your home hi-fi or any other system. The reason for this is the F5's well balanced frequency response-so you won't hear any one frequency higher or lower than any other - but also because they image so well.
What is imaging?
When you listen to music, and close your eyes, can you picture where the instruments are on the "virtual stage"? If you can, you have speakers that image very well-like the Fader Series F5 monitors.
Not only do the F5's provide a clearer view into the music you are making(or just listening to)they also overcome many of the limitations found in many other speakers. Using quality speaker drivers and employing a sophisticated crossover network, they sound clear and transparent. Utilizing a robust heat sink on the amplifier panel ensures that the amp will not over heat during long mixing sessions.
The unique fader volume control enables you to control the volume of the speaker from the front panel. All features that enable the F5 to set a new standard in affordable studio monitoring.
For pro engineers at commercial studios to home studio owners, the Fader Series F5 sets a new affordable standard in studio monitoring.
The woofer driver is 5"(127mm)in diameter and utilizes a low distortion, magnetically shielded magnet structure. That magnet drives a high temperature voice coil, which is mounted to a poly coated, paper pulp cone. The cone is anchored to the frame with a pliant butyl rubber surround which minimizes high frequency resonant peaks that may be transmitted from the cone.Although many claim to use "space age" material in their cones, since the 1920's,the most popular material for woofer cones has been paper pulp. Why? Not only it's great strength-to-weight ratio, but because of it's excellent damping characteristics-leaving the woofer to reproduce pure tones, not the ringing resonances.
Using a uniquely executed 25mm treated silk dome with magnet shielding, the F5 tweeter provides exquisite detail while providing a very natural response. Utilizing a special damping material beneath the dome, resonance and audible distortion is virtually eliminated. Mounted to a special designed wave guide, the tweeter is able to be crossed over at a lower frequency-creating better off-axis response and more output across the mid-band of the device.
Amplification and Crossover Network
The Class AB bi-amplified design separately drives the low and high frequency drivers-allowing each to work independently and more efficiently. Utilizing an external heat sink on the amplifier keeps the heat outside of the enclosure, which allows both the amps and the drivers to operate at lower temperatures. When speakers are not being used, there is an integrated standby function that powers down the amplifier to conserve energy. Combined with phase-optimized crossover networks, the drivers blend together, resulting in a coherent sound stage across the entire audio spectrum.
In order to generate powerful, ultra-crisp sound, there are two separate power amplifiers inside the F5 for driving the woofer and tweeter separately in a high-end bi-amp structure. The power delivered to the woofer driver at a low-rated distortion is 40W, and 30W is also delivered to the tweeter.
Bass-Reflex Slot Port
The wide and narrow slot at the bottom of the front panel of the F5 is the bass-reflex vent port. It is designed to effectively tune the speaker cabinet to a certain frequency, and maximize the bass output of the speaker. It is put on the front panel in order to fire directly at the listener, and also to allow for flexibility of placement(as a rear firing port may interfere with the wall behind it).
Enclosure and Fader Volume Control
The enclosure design of the F5 has a very important role in shaping the overall sonic response of the speaker. Besides being made of acoustically efficient MDF material, it is also reinforced by internal bracing to ensure solid bass response. The customized front baffle uses big radiall around which aids in minimizing acoustic diffraction. The tweeter wave guide not only "guides" the high frequency energy to maximize off axis coverage, but also pushes the tweeter back slightly, allowing for time alignment with the woofer. Probably the most unique feature, of course, is the fader volume control-placed on the front of the speaker where it can be easily reached.
