Editorial Reviews

The signs in Chris Zane s (Passion Pit, The Walkmen) studio couldn t have been any clearer: Don t Overthink It. Or as Asobi Seksu guitarist James Hanna puts it, This time, our agenda was to not have one at all; to be mellow about the entire process instead of obsessing over everything. Maybe mellow isn t the right word, unless he s comparing Fluorescence, the band s fourth proper full-length, to a coiled-up cobra a temperamental type that s often one false move away from striking.

After all, Coming Up sets the scene by plowing into beehive-like synth lines and warp speed washes of dream-pop that leave you wondering just what the hell is going on. Things don t let up on Trails -- catchy and chaotic to the core, the sky-scraping song pays homage to the pitch-perfect songwriting of the 60s by chartering a yellow submarine to the moon. Throughout Fluorescence, Asobi Seksu further refine the bombastic but beautiful blend of hailstorm hooks and fog-shrouded 4AD-isms they ve spent the last decade perfecting

Asobi Seksu's 4th studio full-length produced by Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen) and featuring artwork by Vaughan Oliver (Pixies).

In a word: fun. In three words: fun, but forgettable. It's hard not to be disappointed when Asobi Seksu continues to put out these relaxed, safe albums following the sheer brilliance of 2006's Citrus, an album that legitimately added to the very small canon of "quality" shoegaze, sitting comfortably with the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. It's certainly not bad, though. Where Citrus was a luxurious, high-society affair, Fluorescence is a bit more like the drunken revelry of a house party, trading some of the sophistication and avant edge for a more laid back, fun affair. First single "Trails" is a prime example, a propulsive, catchy, but simple shoegaze anthem. "My Baby" recalls the oddball moments of the Head on the Door, but elsewhere the band is still operating in a very warm, glowing space, "Pink Light" being an excellent example of the album's darker, more thoughtful moments.

A nice shoegaze album and a solid addition to Asobi's canon, Fluorescence is fun and breezy, but it lacks an edge and leaves me wanting for the proper followup to Citrus.

Damn. I've had this album on a loop in my vehicle for the past three days. This thing is like a sonic orgasm. Check out tracks 2, 5, and 6. Those three songs alone are worth the price of the whole album. These are what I refer to as "SHOWers" - songs that I immediately love on first listen. I'd say the other songs are pretty good too, but they're on a "GROWer" level - these are songs that grow on me over time.

I think one problem listeners will find is that they want another album on the level of Citrus. Forget it. Citrus was like the first rush of a drug, the first drop on a rollercoaster: you can't get that high anymore. However, seksu is great any time, anywhere. The band's albums are like great asobi seksu.

I don't know what it is about Asobi Seksu albums, but they either REALLY speak to me or they don't at all. I can safely say that this is one that does. I was a huge fan of Citrus, and never seem to get tired of it, but was disappointed in their later releases. Finally, they come out with an album that speaks to me on the same level as Citrus, and I can listen to over and over without it ever getting old. There isn't a single song that I skip when listening, and it is one of the rare albums that I like to hear from beginning to end each time. I've read some reviews of others who found this album lacking, so it really is a personal thing. With music like this, I've found that reviews don't really matter. I guess it is ironic that I am writing one then... but what I really want to say is that I hope people give this a chance. If I gave up on the band after the last two releases that I didn't care for and after reading a couple of mediocre reviews of this album, I would have missed out big time.

Please, leave the genres alone. Let the band be themselves.

Ratings? All stars/no stars. Experiencing must be unconditional. The music is an expression of what is happening, where they are...whether it feeds a particular fix or not.

Hush is a fine album. Why compare it, or the new one, to anything else?

Regarding the sound quality of the CDs, it was a manufacturing error, and Polyvinyl has received corrected versions.

Fluorescence has its own aesthetic going. Try to let it grow on you.

Just a warning, this entire album is of very poor quality. I pulled the .wav files into my DAW and discovered that they are all from a lossy source. Probably .mp3. This is entirely unacceptable for me. I simply can't see past this failure to give a review of the actual music.
