I can't figure out why this book has not made more of a stir. It lays out a really strong case that fluoride is NOT a nutrient and shouldn't be anywhere near our food or water. It also lays out a description of corruption in high places that led to the fluoridation of water, complete with a description of the intense PR campaign that was waged in the last century to turn the tide of public opinion about fluoride. Whereas fluoride used to be known as a very dangerous pollutant, in the middle of the 20th century it suddenly became known as a healthy tooth vitamin. The thing is, fluoride became very useful to industry and defense projects, and tons of it were/are being released into the environment at the expense of injury to many people & natural places, and hence was born the corruption.
I myself have the mottled teeth that result from excess fluoridation, and after reading this book, I realize that the whole constellation of health issues I have had (asthma, arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, bony joint growths) also happen to be the most common health effects of lower-level fluoride exposure. A couple of things I've often puzzled about before : the early age at which girls reach puberty these days, and the epidemic of thyroid dysfunction esp. among women (thyroid medication is the most widely prescribed medication today). This book says that low-level fluoride exposure does lower the age of girls reaching puberty, and that thyroid dysfunction is a hallmark result of too much fluoride exposure. So maybe therein lies the answer to these puzzles. It also causes neurological effects - and we certainly have plenty of neurological epidemics going on in this country as well! But this is me jumping to conclusions. The book does no such thing. It is reasoned, and simply lays out facts - albeit fascinating ones that pretty much no one knows. Somehow the whole history and real story of fluoride has been wiped from the American consciousness, and this book aims to change that. And a fascinating story it is. Really a page-turner.
