Startech ECUSB351 3.0USB to Expresscard adapter

First let me begin by giving you a back ground on myself. I've been an Electronic Tech and Systems Analyst for 35 years and currently administer all data storage for a medium size hospital. I've been working on disk drives and their associated controllers since disk drives were the size of washing machines. I still marvel at how much data can be stored on today's tiny drives.

I purchased this single port USB 3.0 to Expresscard for my Sony Z laptop running Windows Professional X64 with 8GB of memory and a Corsair 120 GB SSD system drive. I was using a Startech ESata single port adapter, but it's one drawback was the need for external power for attached ESata drives. My ESata adapter has worked well, so I was not apprehensive about purchasing another Startech product.

Pros:
1. It fits flush with the edge of the slot thus preventing it from being damaged.
2. The throughput is twice that of USB 2.0 for the same drive (Western Digital Passport Essential SE 1 TB)
3. It comes with an additional USB 2.0 to DC plug for additional power from an extra USB port. (Haven't needed it so I can't evaluate it)
4. Well built product, sturdy, and does not run to hot.

Cons:
None really, although it does cost a bit more than other adapters.

Real world data throughput numbers:
Using ATTO benchmark software the above mentioned disk drive averaged 25MB/sec writes and 30MB/sec reads on a USB 2.0 bus. Using the Startech USB 3.0 adapter the same disk drive averaged 75MB/sec writes and 80MB/sec reads. To put this in perspective my Dell XPS 630 has Western Digital SATA2 7200 RPM drives and the best they can do is 100MB/sec writes and reads. Don't be mislead by all the fan fair about how fast USB 3.0 can theoretically push through the wire. There are so many factors such as the controller back end, the attributes of the disk drive and the type of files you are transferring.

Additional Notes:
The instructions tell you to use a file named "setup.exe" on the CD which comes with the controller. There was no file named "setup.exe" on the CD. Go to Startech's web page and search for drivers using the part number ECUSB351 and it will lead you to the correct driver.

I find it easier to eject the controller and drive at the same time. If you don't some times the system fails to initialize the controller when you plug a drive back into the USB 3.0 port.

You can use this controller for USB 2.0 products as well. It is fully compatible with 2.0 and 1.0 USB as well. However I strongly doubt Windows 7 would recognize a 1.0 USB product!!

Compatibility problems

As mentioned by other reviewers, the directions that come with the device don't match the CD the directions are written for. Version 1 and 2 drivers on disk didn't work. No notification there was any kind of problem. Happily reported driver and software installation was successful - no such luck. As recommended by another reviewer, downloaded the new version 3 drivers - same story. Talked to Startech support- recommended a course of action: reload the driver (nusb3xhc.inf) from the directory the software was installed in - now it had the decency to report it had a problem. Code 10. Talked to support again. As expected this is an IRQ conflict and there really isn't any way to get around it. He suggested updating the BIOS on MY LAPTOP to see if it rearranged the IRQ assignments at all to allow the device to work - otherwise there wasn't any hope. He also suggested I try the ECUSB3S11 because it had a *slightly* newer chip and *might* use a different IRQ setting that wouldn't conflict with something else on my laptop.

Frankly, I think quality equipment is designed to allow some addressing flexibility in these situations. I gave the equipment two stars because it's not flexible. I have a Sony VAIO (VGN-FZ180E/B) and I've seen other reviewers with VAIOs that weren't able to get this working. So I would recommend that other VAIO users look elsewhere for a USB3 solution. I'm sure the card would otherwise work fine, which is probably why some people are reporting perfect operation out of the box and others, like me, not so much.

It might be helpful if other reviewers mention which computers they have and have not been able to get this card to work in so that future purchasers can make an informed decision. Since there were conflicting reports on this about whether or not it worked I assumed it was a case of knowledgeable users vs. not so knowledgeable - not so - this appears to be a hardware specific issue so please leave hardware specifics in the future on this one.

expensive but a work horse

I'm a repeat customer on Startech products having purchased their bluetooth usb adpater and 2.5 to 3.5" hdd adapters in the past for personal and business purposes. All of their products feel solid, aren't made in china (i don't think), and offer drivers support where applicable. i bought this item to connect my new usb 3.0 external hdd to my old laptop i now use as a home server and when i retire the old laptop and repurpose my current one I know it'll continue to work until I'm ready to retire it altogether when USB 3.0 becomes common place.
