I'm gonna say this as simple as possible without tank vocab cuz I don't have any:
Make sure the hose that *shoots water back into the tank* is SHORTER, and closer in proximity to the canister, THAN the hose that *pulls water from the tank*
Mine was the opposite, and for physics reasons(free energy etc) that was preventing enough water from flowing through the system. I switched it and everything is working and quiet. Seriously it's like a whole different filter now
Attaching a bad drawing to show what helped me!
which cycles out all the nitrate produced by the Fluval. This combination keeps all my numbers at about 0 except nitrate which hovers between 5 and 10 which is great.
BTW, it's a good idea to keep this in a bucket when it's running. You never know when you are going to flub putting the lid on .. and the water pumps fast ;)
OMG, another leak! This time there was a tiny drip leak coming out of where the hoses meet the fittings on the filter. I suggest that you turn the red nuts back away from the end of the tube about 1 inch so that 1 inch of just the tube is exposed. Cut this tube and straight and clean with a knife. Then, slide the tube all the way down until it meets the plastic rim if you have trouble doing this, use a little silicone to help you. Then tighten the nut to the point of where it is snug.
So basically, every place my filter could leak, did leak. That aside, it appears to be a powerful and excellent filter. Much care needs to be taken with all of the O-rings and installation of the tubes as stated above.
The leaks that I was experiencing on both filters was a small trickle leak near the handles. This immediately lit a lightbulb off in the customer service agent. She said that the small O-rings on the connector assembly needed to be properly lubricated with silicone grease. In short, I used a small brush and went around the periphery of both of rings a few times to assure they were coated with grease. After about 12 hours I checked and there are no leaks at all. She told me that essentially water was getting passed one of the O-rings and going back up into the pump assembly then trickling down by the handles.
So, in short, I would apply a thin coat of grease to all these O-rings with a brush whenever I open the filter for service. With the presence of grease on the large Orion, the pump assembly should slide down pretty easily onto the main housing. Both customer service agents suggested pushing down one side by the handle all the way down until there is no gap then fully clip that handle. Repeat the process on the other side. There should be almost no gap all the way around. In other words, don't rely solely on the handles to pull down the pump assembly.
LEAKS LEAKS LEAKS LEAKS!
I am a mechanical engineer by trade and have tried about 6 times to stop this filter from leaking without success, Yes, I know that I can return it and have an RMA in place from the manufacturer. I have found several things that may be the cause. First, there are a number of voids or scratches which are attributed to their injection mold cavities. This is caused by over-used molds that are not properly maintained. The o-ring cannot seal such small cracks. However, I carefully sanded them down and polished them and still have leaks. I noticed that it takes a very large amount of force to put the motor assembly on the main container with the o-ring in place. However, with the o-ring removed, the 2 parts go together quite easily. Therefore, I assess that the large forces needed to fully seat the 2 parts is caused a warp in one of the parts due to the o-ring forces. Poor poor design. Just for grins, I'll try to locate a smaller diameter o-ring to reduce these forces and see if that solves the issue.
In the mean time, I suggest that you DO NOT purchase this filter assembly due to this leakage issue. I would say that I have replaced about 10 gallons of water within a week. My floor is tile and on ground floor so no house damage was done. You want to take that chance?
My 20 year old moved out to find her way in the world, leaving behind two red ear sliders. Initially I was grossed out, but now I like them. They act like little dogs, paddling up to the glass and begging for food 24/7. After upgrading my new pets' tank to a 40 gallon, I realized my pump did not clean the tank. This filter was the one I kept reading about in the "aquarium community". Yep, those exist. I saw pictures, videos, posts of the miracle of this filter. Desperate to have a pretty clear tank too, I bought this filter.
The set up is pretty easy. There are easy to follow instructions, as well as YouTube videos everywhere. I set this thing up yesterday, and I'm not kidding when I say within 2 hours, my tank went from icky to clear.
The turtles seem happy, I am hoping not to have to siphon water out anymore like I was before. Awesome
This filter is great I clean out every 5 to 6 months just rinse out the sponges & put everything together I've had mine for 4 to 5 years. I always have a little time getting running but overall I'm happy with it and lot better than the filters that hang over & it's super quiet don't hear the motor . I would also recommend a UV filter I have that also in my tank for people that are investing in a 50 gal or bigger it helps you can also buy thro amazon
