There was a horrible protein outbreak in one of my aquariums which was very difficult to get under control. There were several articles online along with a few YouTube videos found describing the problem and possible solutions. The one which showed the most promise was installing a skimmer to capture the floating protein.
The protein looks like sawdust floating on the surface of the water; it quickly builds up on the aquarium’s glass along the waterline. Even after cleaning the aquarium thoroughly the problem would quickly reappear. Several of the fish in the tank died.
The quest to find a skimmer began: Most skimmers are very expensive and require an external box filter, which are also very pricy. Finding the Fluval Surface Skimmer was a real boon. After modifying a Penn Plax Cascade Hang-on Aquarium Filter, it was possible to attach the skimmer to the input tube of the filter using the flexible hose included with the skimmer. Once installed, the skimmer immediately began removing protein particles. The protein that had accumulated on the class was cleaned using a paper towel. It was fun watching the specks of protein being trapped by the skimmer. Now the water is crystal-clear with no protein visible in the water.
Time will tell if the fix is permanent or how the Fluval Surface Skimmer will hold-up, but the first impression is five-stars.
