If you didn’t know, these gravel vacuums are just a basic plastic tube and hose and work simply as the result of gravity and pressure. On the tube side, water comes in. It goes out the hose, because the pressure is lower there (you keep the bucket lower than the aquarium).
But the problem is getting the whole process started. You have to jerk the tube furiously to get the water in, and sometimes it just doesn’t work. You’ll disturb all your fish, plants, and rocks and still have no suction. For me, it just stopped working altogether after 2 years.
The simple solution is to get a cleaner that has a simple little pump attached to it. You just push the pump with your thumb to get the process started, and it’s 1000 times easier.
I was able to get into small crevices without disturbing my coral and it picked up very well. I didnt have any issues with the substrate (sand in my case) either. It didnt get clogged once, I also wasnt digging it down deep into the substrate like a madman either as the tube is obviously way too narrow for that. This is more for detailed cleaning of smaller tanks or a secondary siphon for your detailed spot cleaning of a larger tank. If youre looking for a "go to" siphon for anything larger than 15 maybe 20 gallons, this most likely wouldnt be it. I consider my tanks art so this would be one of my detail brushes, not great for broad strokes.
In summary, this thing absolutely rocks. I have FOUR fish tanks that I clean with the Fluval EDGE...a 3-gallon bow, 10-gallon rectangle, 16 gallon bow, and 20 gallon rectangle. Even though getting the water flow started on the small tank takes a bit of creativity (angling it between decorations) it works great. I would imagine that this product would work even better for larger tanks as well.
If you are looking for a quick and relatively inexpensive way to keep your aquariums looking nice, this is a great place to start. One word of advice I can give is with the smaller tanks, once you get the water flowing, crimp the hose a little as you move from spot to spot so you don't remove the water as quickly. Jam the tube into the gravel, straighten the hose and watch the junk fly out! Highly recommended.
The Fluval gravel cleaner is almost perfect for my tank, well more so sanded aquariums. I would assume if its great with sand, it's also great with regular gravel. It's nice and long which means less of your hand/arm is in ur tank, if not at all. Because it's long, it allows you to react quickly in the event you accidentally suck up too much sand and or a fish. It doesn't suck up the water too fast or too slow, which allows you to thoroughly clean your tank with minimal water loss. My only complaint is that the hose is to thin. Basically when your cleaning the tank, the hose will kink where its connected to the gravel cleaner. I supposed that could be easily fix by slipping a long spring over that area to act as a stress relief as seen on electric cords. Or you could just purchase a thicker/longer hose at a hardware store.
