I bought these to help keep birds off my boat which sits moored on salt water 3-4 months out of the year. I strung together a mat of these and put them onto the top of my boat. After three seasons, the spikes are still in great condition, no rust. The spikes do a good job of keeping the birds off the boat most of the season. At the end of the season, the herons eventually figure out that they are tall enough that the spikes aren't a problem for them, but this keeps the seagulls away quite nicely. I purchased the spikes after reading the reviews. I dont's know if the pigeons are smarter in the South. But I had someone install the spikes on several ledges that are on the front of my house. After he was finish installing them, the pigeons just maneuver their way to the middle of the spikes and sat there. Now I know why you can't purchase these in the hardware stores, customers would be contantly returning them. I wasted my money. The installer boxed the ledges off with wire and no more pigeons.
These things really work! I installed them over my fireplace chimney cap, to keep the noisy and messy pigeons away. Now, they've take to tormenting someone else. I like these because they are all metal....no plastic to degrade in the sun.
Purchased this item to control pigeons messing the eaves of the house. Placed three in the eave and no more pigeons. I recommend this device for those who want to control pigeons nesting in the eaves of the house.
