everything we know and then stretch beyond even that to unexplored
areas, areas that, once visited, seem hauntingly familiar. After a
nine-year fear-induced hiatus from flying, I once again discovered

I am not sure whether it will work for everyone but it did do wonders for me and as someone who always in lookout for coping with fear of flying methods, I strongly recommend this cd/mp3.
This has 10 meditations in it and they are supposed to prepare you from days before flying until landing.
The meditation is read/ said/ presented by a soothing female voice along with a soothing music at the background.
If you would like to take the full advantage of this set of meditations, I recommend to begin them couple of days prior to your flight with the first meditation called "dress rehearsal" that mimics your arrival to the airport. I began two days prior to my flight where I had difficulties of sleeping due to the stress of flying. To mimic the pre-flight actually soothed me.
I also used the rest of the meditations during my flights: there is a beautiful body scan mediation, breathing mediation and kindness and compassion one.The content is rational and soothing. It reminds you during the flight that fear is just one affect among others and teaches the ways to handle it. The meditation gives very concrete, practical steps to cope with fear which is something I really needed and admired.
For instance, even if I know that turbulence is not dangerous , that it is part of the flying (due to my fear I read from ask the pilot books to engineering schemes of flying unfortunately with fear, rationality and knowledge does not do much), I still experience fear symptoms similar to panic attack whenever I experience turbulence. Especially, if and when the pilot asks the crew to stop the service and put their belts on, I have a tendency to loose all control and calm. I start sweating, trembling, my heart goes racing and I feel the blood is leaving my veins.
At one part of this guided mediation, I am asked to actually locate my symptomatic fear on my body. That is, when fear comes, or panic comes, I tried to locate it on my body rather than trying to suppress it. At first, I found this suggestion ridiculous. I was sweating and my stomach and heart were racing. But , being miserable and having no better choice, I tried to apply - with great difficulty at first- to locate and understand the bodily fear. And after the 3rd time or so, it became easier both to locate my fear and actually diminish it.
Hence, with this simple , practical and soothing meditations, I manage to fly without xanax and with less fear and less panic. For someone who sometimes faint due to fear, I call this a success.
I uploaded this to my ipod/ iphone and there are not clear breaks between meditations: this is nice because you do not want to hear a switch between guided body scan and kindness meditation.
All in all, I strongly and strongly recommend this guided meditation to anyone who feels uneasy about and/or scared of flying. Especially If you already meditate , I believe you would find these meditations effective and soothing.
