Editorial Reviews

Rita Fecher and Henry Chalfant direct this intimate documentary portrait of gang life in the New York Bronx from the late 1960s to the early 1990s. Set against a backdrop of uprooted families, cultural alienation, drugs and violence, the development of gang culture was not an entirely negative force; in fact, these 'families' often had a stabilising effect on the community, enabling the youths to cope with their troubled environment.

This is a powerful and impacting documentary. It features rare footage of the mostly African-American and Puerto Rican South Bronx gangs from the 1970's, and updates the footage by visiting the gang members in early 1990's New York. There is nothing predictable about the documentary, and it gives real names and life-stories of the actual gang leaders. It is essential viewing for those interested in the early years of Hip Hop, and complements and enhances the film "80 Blocks from Tiffany's" and the books "Yes Yes Y'All" and "Can't Stop Won't Stop".

My younger brother and many of his friends were Getto Brothers in B'klyn chapter back in the days. So I knew this gang. But most important, one of the gang members presenting his side of the story was a friend of mine. It was heartfelt to watch him on the screen knowing he died when he was 20yrs. old of an overdose of drugs and liquor. I'm 60 yrs. old now and this DVD brought back many memories of my youth............awesome.

Interesting documentary. Intriguing to see real, raw classic footage from the 60's and 70's including the way in which people talked back then, the clothes that they wore at the time as well as their thoughts and attitudes. It was also cool to see how some of the gang members grew into men and women in the 80's and 90's and how their thoughts and attitudes had changed.

Memories flood back into my brain of my days growing up in the bronx. My wife who is from PA heard a lot about what life was like in those days, but this is a clear window into the era. Very well done!

Most of this topic has already been covered in 80 blocks from Tiffany's the only difference is there's some recent footage of the main characters but anybody who is a Bronx gang aficionado from the early mid and late 70s knows this cast of characters one thing that is very interesting is during these prehip-hop days the gang members looked more like rock and rollers you know like bikers without motorcycles they were flying a lot hippie styles back then to with their and the jean jackets I personally like the West Coast style of dress with the bandannas much better when you can fly cut sleeves or fly blue or red bandannas but just fly your colors and represent respectfully Johnny Irish
