Finally, a sweet story with a beautiful family. We absolutely loved this story. Our daughter has renamed the parents, so when we read the story we have to replace the little girl's moms' names with ours. To the writer, please, please, please write more sweet stories. Unfortunately, for the lizards, beetles and butterflies in our backyard, she has a new found delight in bringing new friends into our home.

Told from the point of view of a firefly who has been caught by a little girl and plots to escape. This is one clever firefly. I think it will help children understand more about enjoying nature and their families.

I bought this book because I wanted my 3 year old daughter to have more books that represent our two-mom family. I wanted books that portrayed two moms as simply a part of the story and not as a problem. Many gay and lesbian themed kids books involve a plotline about neighborhood kids not being able to play at the house of the family with two moms/dads or something similar. My daughter has never encountered any homophobia like that so I try to avoid books with those themes.

This is a story of a little girl who captures a firefly in a jar and brings it into her room to be a nightlight. Her two moms try to convince her that the firefly would be happier outside. I'm sure I'm not giving anything away when I tell you that she eventually lets the firefly go and buys a nightlight instead. It's a pretty typical kids' story in a lot of respects. The story is awkwardly told from the point of view of the firefly which I could tell my daughter found confusing and frankly I did too. I know they were trying to do something out of the norm but it isn't well done.

Whomever publishes this has improved their printing techniques since those other reviews were written. It's obviously self published (clunky font, mediocre illustrations, it just has the look of a book that's not published professionally) but is bound well and no letters are cut off of the page. The illustrations are colored pencil drawings. They're not terrible but not all that good either.

This isn't one of my daughter's favorites but I am glad to have it on our shelf because it shows a family that looks like ours. I don't think it's a particularly good book, but there aren't a lot of books out there with two mom families in them, especially ones that fit my narrow criteria. I hope that in the next few years there will be more options available that are better written than this one but for now I'm glad to at least have a few books that look like our family.

My 4 year old daughter loves this book! We pulled it off the shelf again when we saw the need to explain why we couldn't keep Wormy forever. 😀 As a parent, I appreciate the sweet story without homophobic drama that mirrors a family like ours...not enough books out there yet! I hope this author will write more...and with a son character, too! :)

What a great story. A two mom book that is not about the fact that there are two moms but instead about respecting life, even the lives of bugs. My two year old loves this book and wants to read it every night.

Printing is off; content is great

The printing in the book is off on the left hand page, so that the first part of each line is cut off. It's worse in the beginning of the book, where up to 2 letters are cut off. Other than that, the content of the book is great!

Our son and daughter's favorite story to read again and again is Flying Free. The colorful illustrations add even more fun to the suspenseful story line. Reading about diverse families is important for all children, and therefore any family can benefit from this cute children's book. A staple gift for young children, their libraries and classrooms!

Cute story but incredibly cheaply made book. Small, thin cover and pages held together by a couple staples. The print was crooked and runs off the side. Definitely not worth $17.00!!

This book is absolutely beautiful. The illustrations are colourful and bright. I love that the focus is on the firefly, not the same-sex parents, therefore it is just like books that represent heterosexual parents, and not over emphasizing on the two mums. Me and my wife are a same sex family expecting our first child and I cannot wait to read this book to the baby. The way it is written is beautiful and the colour analogy of red and blue make violet is great.
Need more books like this. Just love it!!!!
