Season 1
4.2 out of 5 stars (21) IMDb 7.1/10

Check out properties that are so extraordinary that it's often what's beyond the house that proves to be the main attraction, from the ability to hunt and fish from a back deck, to extreme seclusion on your own private island. However, there are also dangers that come with all the beauty from animal attacks to brutal winters that cut you off from society when you're Buying Alaska.

We're from Alaska living temporarily in the Lower 48. We love this show. it's accurate and while they tend to highlight the more unusual living situations, there are still plenty of those. But of course many people live and work in a city with all the modern conveniences. When I married my husband in 1979, who was working in Alaska for a helicopter company that was involved in the oil pipeline support, he had recently bought a "dry" log cabin just outside of Fairbanks. I lived in Southern California and my wedding gift was to chose if I wanted water or electricity in the cabin before I moved north. After careful consideration I chose electricity. We hauled our water for a few years and eventually put in a holding tank. But when we sold 5 1/2 years later, we still had an outhouse. We're both recently retired and going back to Alaska. The simple life that one can live in Alaska just can't be beat. This show just makes us all that much more home sick.

"Buying Alaska" is entertaining as well as enlightening. It is entertaining because the viewer gets to see some unusual homes in Alaska's exotic locations, all in the comfort of his own home. It is enlightening because the show tells what it takes to rough it out in the woods - dilapidated cabin, smelly outhouse, no electricity, no running water, fifty miles to the nearest store ...unless you are a football player like Jason Elam, who can afford a million dollar island home, with all the amenities of civilized living.

P.S. Actually, most of the get-away homes featured in this series are not dilapidated cabins with smelly outhouses. They are decent homes, but their price tags range from $250,000 to $300,000, which are a lot to a working stiff like me.

I love watching this show. I would NEVER move to Alaska but its fun to see what drives others to live there. Its hilarious to watch couples making choices between indoor plumbing and access by boat only. Kid friendly.

Enjoyed seeing the variety of places and regions. Could go more broadly across the state however. Most of the places are near the Kenai.

Much like House Hunters on HGTV, but unique to Alaska. It's interesting to see various parts of Alaska and the different considerations in buying a house in Alaska.
