I normally don't write reviews - but these are literally the worst built headphones I've ever used, and I've owned plenty of them over the past 20 years. For the price, you'd expect them not to fall apart within the first year and Focal's response to it is more or less "deal with Amazon" (go ahead and go to their site, and look at the reviews they've quietly tried to hide). At this point, their sound quality doesn't matter if they can't properly fit on your head because the hinges literally crack and break from the lightest use. To be clear: I never traveled with them, they always sat on my desk, and I never wore them in an awkward position.
After 4 months, the left hinge started to split and I had to use a zip-tie to prevent it from further falling apart. The problem is in the design: the bottom of the hinge has so much flex for a stress point where two pieces of the headband adjustment come together. Even the most gentle of use will eventually cause this stress point to loosen up.
Fast forward 5 months, and today when I put them on, the other hinge literally snapped from the inside and now they don't even rest properly on my head. Both joints completely fell apart within a year and that cheap, soft plastic they use is the culprit. As a company, they have little integrity to address this glaring quality control issue.
They sound great, but that doesn't amount to anything if they're this disposable. Save your money and look elsewhere.

I'm a professional mixing and mastering engineer with decades of experience. I've also owned more expensive headphones than these, including AKG K-1000's. But for pro audio work these are the best I've heard, hands down. Amazing actually. You can make critical decisions on these with confidence.
Focal of course makes pro audio speakers that are highly praised, as well as very high end audiophile speakers, so they unquestionably have the experience and technology to make something like this.
The one slight complaint is that they aren't the most comfortable. BUT.. any headphones eventually become uncomfortable, at least for me. I have more comfortable headphones for normal monitoring but for critical listening, nothing compares to these that I'm aware of. I am VERY happy with these! If you are in need of this sort of thing, definitely check these out. They aren't cheap but personally I consider these quite a bargain!!!

My current main headphone is the Beyerdynamic DT880 for mixing and producing music. I needed a pair of headphones with better isolation to wear while tracking to reduce bleed and for working in noisy environments (in a cafe, on a plane). The Focal Spirits where not my pick so I returned them.
Pros:
- Sound quality was good, didn't like quite as much as the DT880
- Very sturdy
Cons:
- Top of the head gets uncomfortable quickly, and the shape of the ears dosen't allow you to adjust the position at all.
- Too heavy and bulky to be portable.

These are fantastic.. I was very picky about finding a closed back headphone that had crisp low, mids, and highs, but also a very well blended sound. I tried beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 32 Ohm Studio Headphones first, but sent those back after a week. Sounds were too isolated with those headphones - the mix would easily get dominated by little sounds in the highs. It annoyed the hell out of me, not accurate, and not consistently fun to listen to. The Focal Spirit was immediately heads and shoulders above the DT 770 32 ohms's. I paid about $200 for the spirits, and about ~$160 for the DT 770's. They were in two different worlds, although the price similarity would suggest they are competitors. I did get these on a good sale on amazon, I think retail was $349 at the time.

Really sound fantastic, especially when compared to my Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro's (my current favorite-really fantastic) when powered through my Universal Audio apollo twin. The sound is much fuller in the low frequency range. The construction is mainly plastic, and that seem's a little cheap, especially when considering the price. The deal breaker here is the comfort. Not just uncomfortable, but painful. It's weird, the cups are really small, they sit on top of my earlobes, instead of around them. After 15 minutes, I have to take them off. I hope Focal come out with a similar design that surrounds the 'lobes, instead of crushing them, because I'll be first in line to buy. I would recommend giving these a try, because if you find them comfortable, you'll probably really appreciate their sound.

I was nervous about spending so much money on a pair of headphones.
Honestly the pair I have received has been the most please experience working with sound period. I have even taken to using them out of the office at home, as I simply enjoy the, for lack of an all-in-one in term, focus.
My audio engineer has taken to using these when mixing live and mastering vocals and instruments, as he believes they give a better, direct vision of the sound than any of his sets of opened-styled headphones.
Well worth the investment, all our stuff sounds amazing across many devices thanks to these.

My wife asked for beats by dre for xmas. I knew I could do way better than that for the price by looking at studio monitors.
When I found out Focal made headphones I knew it was worth trying. Lets just say these are the best headphones I've ever heard. I use em in the studio when she's not using them!
Everything about them is amazing.

Something special and not just for pros!

This new headphone from Focal may just be the best available at the price. It has in common with the Focal Spirit an organic expression of music . I think two attributes contribute to this intangible but recognisable quality. First is an even handed frequency range with everything there but nothing standing out. Second is the transient response :the rapid starting and stopping of notes that gives a dynamic energy to the sound. This even response and dynamic energy gives an exceptional realism to the music it plays. I have compared the Pro with all it's price peers : Sennheiser; Yamaha 500 Pro ,PSB , KEF etc and phones at a much costlier level: Sennheiser 800; Beyerdynamic T1; Ultrasone Edition 8 . IMHO it beats them all. It is sensitive enough to play straight from an iPhone and sounds great but it gives of its best through an amp. At the moment I am listening through a Slee Solo and the sound is as good as it gets.
Like all phones it benefits from break in . Try to give it a trial: you won't be disappointed !

I am an avid audiophile with an electrical engineering degree from MIT, so I want to assure potential purchasers that I am not one of those enthusiasts who partake themselves in mythical audio improvements.
At home, I have the flagship Focal speakers Grand Utopia EM and wanted a portable closed headphones to listen to music. The Focal ethos in audio reproduction seems to be in accuracy and neutrality, in other words no boosting of certain frequencies to give the headphones a unique colouring. Out of the countless headphones I have owned, this one is right up there in terms of accuracy and neutrality. I find them as good as if not better most headphones in the 1000GBP price range such as the HD800 and LCD-2.
If you want to listen to true to life representation of music, I believe these are definitely the best headphones within its own price range and competitive if not better than the top top price ranges. These are Especially great for classical music lovers. The piano which is notoriously difficult to reproduce accurately sounds fantastic with these headphones!

Fantastic headphones
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2014
If you want these headphones summed up in one sentence, here it is: In my opinion, these headphones sound simply superb and provide a very comfortable, enjoyable and non-fatiguing listening experience.
If you want a bit more detail, read on...
I've now had these headphones since they first entered the market in April 2014. I was fortunate enough to be one of the few customers who caught them on a limited pre-order, for around £165. I've not seen them that cheap since. However, all my comments in this review remain the same, even if I had paid the current price of around £200. In my opinion, they're worth every penny.
So let's get down to the nitty gritty. Quite simply, these are the most balanced and clear-sounding headphones I've ever heard. In other words, they are the complete opposite of Dr Dre Beats. No particular frequency range is emphasised or ignored. That said, if you like the sound of Dr Dre Beats and can listen to them for hours on end with no fatigue, then you probably won't like these Focal headphones. The Focals certainly do NOT have a big "hump" in the bass frequency response and therefore anyone who loves that bass-heavy sound will likely be disappointed with the clear, balanced sound provided by the Focal Spirit Pros.
But for me, these headphone are as close to perfection as I think I am likely to get without spending £500+.
Further, because of the superior clarity and the well-balanced frequency response of these headphones, I believe you can listen to them at a lower equivalent SPL level than some other headphones, and this can only be a good thing for your hearing.
If you do not already know, it's worth knowing that Focal are the manufacturers of some of the most high-end and best-sounding loudspeakers available, for professional music and movie mixing and mastering studios, as well as the high-end "Hi-Fi" domestic retail market. Overall, Focal probably have more specialised audio loudspeaker design knowledge and experience than many of the most popular audio brand names. So it's perhaps no surprise that they've come out with such an incredible pair of headphones. What is a surprise however, is the price point. To my ears, these headphones sound superior to anything I've heard up to £300.
PROs:
• Fantastic, clear and accurate sound. Every musical detail is presented "as is", without prejudice or bias.
• Not tiring or fatiguing at all. I can listen to these for hours.
• Extremely comfortable. I can wear these for hours without even noticing them.
• The ear pads don't make my ears sweat! :-) (wish I could say the same for all headphones).
• The ear pads stay clean! In comparison, my Sennheiser 595 headphones attract dirt and other particles with their velour-type ear pads. Very impressed with the memory foam material chosen by Focal.
• Great sound isolation.
• Closed-back design means that sound leakage is minimal, so you won't annoy others around you.
• To my ears, it's impossible to dislike the sound of these headphones. The sound is neutral, balanced, polite and inoffensive - the "Perfect Gentleman" of the music world. They're so polite and well-behaved you could introduce your parents to them.
• Go loud without distortion.
• Give you a transparent sonic "window" into the world of your music.
• Very hard-wearing finish which is resistant to scratches and other surface damage. This unique "wet look" is not to everyone's taste however.
• Quality re-usable packaging. Love the use of studio acoustic foam in the box to infer the implied "Professional" use for these headphones.
CONs:
• The stiff materials used for the headband and clamping mechanism take some time to wear-in. INITIALLY, the clamping force on the head is a little too tight and the headphones can only be worn for about 30 mins at a time. BUT after a few days of use the materials and clamping mechanism "give" a little, making them very comfortable indeed. This material stiffness was probably required for strength reasons, so I can't be too critical of Focal here.
• The "Left" and "Right" markers could be clearer.
• The headband itself and also the headband adjustment mechanism is not the strongest. It just means you have to be a little bit careful and gentle when adjusting and removing the headphones.
• The coiled cable is arguably better sounding than the "mobile" short one. However, a coil-style cable is not to everyone's tastes or needs. That said, the cable is replaceable, so you could purchase a third-party cable more to your liking.
• These headphones are not particularly forgiving of low quality and/or highly compressed source material. However, this certainly does NOT mean that you need lossless 192 Khz 24-bit or even 32-bit source material. As an absolute minimum, 16-bit, 44.1 Khz, 256 kbps bitrate MP3/AAC is OK, and Lossless 16-bit or 24-bit 48Khz is certainly enough to get the most out of these headphones.
• The ear pads are quite small in terms of their inner dimensions. I have smallish ears so they fit perfectly and the pads surround my whole ear. That said, the clamping force is "just right" (after an initial wear-in period), and some users with larger ears have commented that the headphones are still very confortable and great-sounding even with the pads "on" their ears rather than "around" their ears, so this might not be an issue.
• The supplied drawstring storage bag is a little thin and flimsy. Nowhere near as good as the zip bag supplied with the Denon ADH-600 for example.
You may wonder how I can give a product so many "Cons" and yet still rate it 5 stars. Please be aware I'm being very picky. Note however, that all the PROs I've mentioned are IMPORTANT things, whereas the CONs are (mostly) TRIVIAL. Ultimately, I'm trying to be as balanced in my review as possible, to help you make an informed buying decision.
To sum up, if I could keep just one pair of headphones (oh how the Wife would love that!), I would keep the Focals. For me, the Focal Spirit Pro are my "desert island" headphones. Nothing more to say.

Let the music speak for itself!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 23, 2015
These are really great sounding headphones and able to do justice to a wide range of music.
They are closed back, so are quite successful at preventing sound escape and vice versa, one of my basic requirements. The speckle finish appears tough and quite attractive, but not overtly luxurious or in any way bling. The lettering is uncoloured and polished into the headband - a neat, understated touch. More importantly, despite having quite a big head, they prove extremely comfortable for many hours use. Whilst not ultra portable due to their size, they can be used walking if not jogging.
Before buying I auditioned several pairs of phones up to £250, but was unable to find a model I felt sounded natural. From the crass over egged bass of some Beats models, to the more sophisticated engineered warmth of some models like the NAD VISO HP50 and Beyerdynamic T51, it seemed to me that whilst they could sound good on some music, they could really let down others due to their colouration. Other models sounded plain opaque to me.
I was attracted to the Spirit Professional Headphones due to their tonal neutrality being the general consensus of several reviews and the fact that Focal had designed them as professional monitor phones. This implies that Spirit Professionals would 'let the music speak for itself', rather than try to introduce character or fireworks artificially. I decided to risk buying 'unauditioned' from Amazon as I was unable to find a shop that stocked them.
To be honest, on first receiving them, I was more than a little disappointed with the sound. Whilst there were definitely strengths to the reproduction, the balance was thick, the treble shrouded and music sounded lifeless. Experience told me they probably needed burning in - after 48 hours with varied music playing through them into a cushion, the quality had improved vastly. In fact these phones went on improving for as much as 100 hours use, much to my relief and satisfaction.
The sound is to my ears balanced and natural. Bass quality with headphones may be a subjective thing, so to those who like Beats style reproduction, the bass would probably sound lean. In fact, barring the deepest bass that is out of range of all headphones I have heard, the tonal balance is extremely even, particularly once the treble has opened out with usage. Bass is powerful when required, but is also agile and detailed. The midrange is smooth and nicely textured making vocals particularly attractive. The treble is sophisticated and smooth if not overly detailed.
The sound stage and instrumental separation is excellent and much more open and less 'in your head' than most closed back designs. Transients are clean and forceful, making percussion lines particularly realistic and visceral. My best source for headphones is an Audioquest Dragonfly v1.2, but I get the impression these phones could do justice to a higher quality headphone amp. For the price, the sheer balance and sophistication of the Spirit Professionals is terrific. Focal should be proud. Highly recommended.

Great neutral headphones at a good price, poor plastic build quality which ends up in cracks, breaking.

Great neutral headphones at a good price, they did feel a bit tight on the head in the beginning, mine are now just over 2 years warranty and cracks appeared on the left band (lead side) that slides into the head band, I have only used these in my studio so they had been treated carefully, result is now it is weak on one side doesn't fit over the ear correctly unless I hold it there, this is a fundamental design/build issue with these headphones, because the top band is fairly rigid so extra pressure is put on the sides as it clamps to your head, there are a lot of complaints on various forums about this issue. I am guess they used inferior plastic to keep the price down.
