We then tried to return it via Amazon and guess what? We are outside the return window per Amazon Policy. Now we have to go through West Bend to see if THEY will replace it with a functioning unit. Hope so.
We used a Melita urn that looked almost like this for 4-5 years. had to change the heating element on that 2-3 times during that time at last it started to leak and we could not find the part for it so we got this from Bed & Bath.
This unit feels like quality material, It looks nice, luxurious and shiny. we wipe it down every 2 weeks to make it shine again.
we have it on 24/7 literally and we refill it twice a week. in the past 4-5 months we had this it has been awesome with no trouble.
After 2-3 months I boiled some pure white vinegar (with PH of 2.5) in it for 20 min to clean it up and oh man it looks nice and clean inside again. (our water is medium hardness tap water 180PPM and 7.8PH)
Some people claim it is aluminum.. it does not seam like that to me.. it is too heavy to be aluminum, and it has no rust or anything anywhere.
Based on this usage pattern I expect the heating element to last 2-3 years. This is a simple design and the heating element can be changed. I will buy and store some of the faucet perhaps in case they stop making the parts for it, and I will have this unit for a very long time.
cost of maintenance:
Some vinegar to clean it up every month or 2 ( 5$/year)
Heating element exchange (35$/every 3 years)
Faucet exchange every 3-5 years ( I have to find the price but should not be more than 20$)
As for electricity usage:
This unit is not insulated so it will get hot and lose heat through the body of it. If you care to have an efficient unit you can either cover it with some towels to reduce the heat loss or get a unit that keeps the water in an insulated container. This was not a concern to me at this point.
It worked really well but was a little noisy while it "percolated" getting the water hot.
I am very satisfied with the product but cannot speak to it's ability to make coffee as we will not be using it for that purpose.

Very pretty and functional. I will only use this a couple of times a year so I'm sure it will last a long time.Published 16 days ago by coptexas2
This urn gets exceptionally hot, just like a steel pot on the stove, so it is a problem if you want to move it to the sink, put it away right after use, simply touch it, or have it... Read morePublished 23 days ago by Mark A
Faulty, confirmed by West Bend support line, but cannot be returned. Ran a "test run" the day of a party and it failed to ever stop percolating - overheated - turned coffee... Read morePublished 1 month ago by Ms Ph
