A truly informative guide about safaris in general, specific countries and safari companies. Tells you what to look for-best companies, lodging, guides, locations, etc. I found it very useful in planning where, when, and how I want to go.

I bought the book, hoping it would have a lot of information about the natural history of Africa's parks and it does not much more than glossing over this most important part of safari planning. Most of the information you'll find there is already on Lonely Planet's website and trip advisor. I wonder how much Fodor's gets paid to write page after page about the lodges in each park. Unfortunately they don't seem to understand that there's a lot more to planning safaris than just lodges and good old cookie cutter tips that are out there on the good old Internet. A huge part of it is appreciating what biodiversity you want to see and can hope for.

Photography advice is amateurish, though it's often central to safaris. I almost fell of my chair reading that you can't hand hold anything above 200mm. Yes, of course if you've had 5 jars of coffee you're going to struggle, but guess what - that isn't the norm in the bush.

All in all skip the book - free resources like WikiTravel will do a lot better.

While not a bad general purpose travel book, it is lacking in the type of information a hunter to this part of the world would need. One example is a resort that offers yoga classes in view of a park. "African Vacations" would have been a much better working title.

This is a very helpful and comprehensive overview of safaris/wildlife tours in Africa. It deals with all parts of the continent. In addition to tips on wildlife it has information about cultures, climates, places which are less safe for Westerners, diseases and necessary immunizations and medications, something about city life, and much more. For the person who is in the beginning stages of planning a wildlife trip to Africa, it's very helpful. For the person who has already decided on a specific country and/or a specific tour, Fodor's Guide may be too general - but it's still helpful. Highly recommended

We have read this cover to cover for an upcoming trip to botswana and there are little nuggets of info we NEVER would have thought of. WELL worth a read.

Lots of good, useful information. Much of it proved useful in the planning of our recent African vacation. The safari lodges, restaurants and acommodations that Fodor's discusses tend to be exclusively at the very high end of the price scale. This rather limits the book's usefulness for those of us with a more restrictive budget. These days there's plenty of useful information available free on the internet so the utility of traditional travel guide books is rather diminished.

This guidebook has so much information. My sister and I are planning an African Safari trip and couldn't decide on exactly which countries and areas. This book helped us decide based on ease of transportation, the variety of animals we could see in the wild, and options for where to stay and what to do. Very good resource.
