This book is very useful when planning our trip to Italy.

The biggest downside I would say is that the gutter (where the book goes into the spine) is so narrow that sometimes it makes it hard to read what's on the page as the font is small, lightweight and curving makes it tough. If you're hard of seeing I would not recommend this book.

Get Frommer instead or an older Fodor

When I use these books, I’m looking for recommendations and descriptions as well as the long monologues. I think there must have been a rush to get this out because there were no such recommendations. I’m sure Covid was the major factor, but I’d have sooner had prior recommendations from them. They could have called those places for updates, couldn’t they? There were hotels and restaurants and even museums who changed their hours or even opening, I get it and statements could have been made accordingly. They don’t have to guarantee, they need to recommend. I had an older Fodor that did have recommendations and I used those to compare to Frommer and Travel Advisor. I didn’t even use this book on my recent trip. More upfront time for me prior to the trip to research I guess.

The book covers a lot of territory and leaves little on details. The sub titles for each city are hard to find and the print is unusually small which makes this book not a good reference. Internet searches are more informative and quicker than trying to find specifics in this book. The information is a bit watered down because the book is trying to cover the whole country.

Background: I usually get one guide book for some of my trips and think nothing of trying others. Usually the most recent edition or I use Lonely Planet for more outdoor stuff. This trip to Italy is for my niece so I want to make it is awesome esp. in times of COVID. So I got both Steve’s and Fodor’s and there is a noticeable difference with the winner guide being Steve’s.

Steve’s is more practical with know before you go info and much better laid out. The biggest issues I had with Fodor’s is I don’t need historical details and breakdowns and pictures of things I plan to see in Italy. That’s why I’m going!!!!

Dividing things by zone especially when everything is walking distance made me have to flip through pages to find the list of a place to stay or eat and the list was very small compared to Steve’s list Also found that Fodor seemed to focus on anything $$$ and up. Most disappointing is the practical info like tours and mass transit info was lacking. I understand things can change but the book should have some basic info especially if you are updating these books every 1-2 years. For example, there is train station in Florence and here’s the website. Thanks I could have googled that too. More detail on how to plan a trip and not the history of what I will see on the trip is what a tour book should provide.

This book provides very basic info on most places other than big cities. If you want to know the bare minimum on smaller towns and areas, this will give it to you but it’s unlikely to be all you’ll need. I was just in the Dolomites and Lake Como and they had maybe a paragraph or two on most places there, less than I could find in a two second google search. I wouldn’t recommend.
