I bought this book in preparation for a driving trip from Frisco to Crescent City. The map included is small and it is of the whole state of California. It also has tons of info on Central California which I did not need. Actually about 50 pages applies to my trip and the map is useless because it is too small to give the detail I need. I suppose some people would appreciate this book but it was a bit disappointing for me. I got better books from AAA for free.

This is the first time I have purchased Fodor's guide books having always bought the Lonely Planet guides in the past.
I am quite impressed with the layout and the content of the guide. I find it is quite easy to read and has great ideas for sightseeing. I actually prefer these to the LP ones now.
Bonus: they have little duck icons for things that will be good for kids to do while visiting. I find this quite handy for suggestions as I have a young one to entertain as well :)
My only complaint about this one in particular is the fact that San Jose is no where to be found in this book which is confusing as it is so close to SF and other major cities are covered from Santa Barbara to SF. I was planning on making a stop to SJ.

I ordered this because it was the only Fodors Guide that covers Lake Tahoe. It had only one small chapter on the area. Therefore, most of the book and the map were useless to me. The one chapter was very informative and contained lots of great tips for sightseeing. However, a more in depth book for the Lake Tahoe and surrounding area would have been ideal.

Fodor's is known for great guides and this certainly fits the bill. It has some really good maps, neat, off the path info, and some amazing photos. Not essential to a good time in N. Cali, but certainly added some good elements to the trip.

This book was great for lots of general information about northern California. If you're looking for details about an area, don't buy this. But if you just want a good overview of all areas, it's perfect. It even has information on small, tiny towns that you might drive through on major roads.

Everything is there. No fluff. Great day trip guide, nice review of Tahoe area, includes the big national parks. It's a one-book guide that covers it all.
