Fogo Super Premium Hardwood Lump Charcoal
Perfect for Kamado Style Cookers like Big Green Egg, Kamado, Primo etc.
Fogo Hardwood Lump Charcoal is made from dense Central American Hardwood and only hand selected pieces make it into every bag to ensure that you get the very best charcoal you can find.
Fogo means Fire and that's what Fogo is - it lights very quickly and is ready to grill within 15 minutes. It burns very hot, searing the meat and locking in the flavors and it lasts longer than other charcoal you can find.
Fogo is made exclusively from dense hardwood trimmings and using selected trees with no other added ingredients whatsoever. Fogo is an all natural, high quality product that imparts your food with the very best flavor and taste.
Fast to Light
Simply use a Chimney Starter or build a pile/pyramid and put and ball of kitchen papel towel soaked with vegetable oil underneath the charcoal. We don't recommend the use of Lighter Fluid.
All Natural and Great Tasting
Our only ingredient in making this charcoal is Oak Hardwood. Nothing else goes into this product. This ensures a clean and natural burning fire that makes your food taste great. Try cooking your meat directly on top of the hot coal like President Eisenhower preferred too.
Great with Everything: Meat, Fish, Vegetables
Great for Low and Slow cooks, or cook directly on the coals, or indirectly maybe a salmon filet on a cedar plank. This charcoal makes everything taste great.

Nothing can beat the price if you happen to have a local wholesaler of charcoal. But I have found that Amazon's pricing is very competitive compared to supermarkets, home centers etc. Add to that that it is completely hassle free - you order it, two days later you have it sitting in your garage, I must say for me it's worth the extra money. Time saved, car clean... Happy Wife!
I want to break down the quality point into three parts - size, burning, smoke/flavor.
Size - I must say I read that this is Premium Charcoal and that it was supposed to be big pieces, but which charcoal manufacturer doesn't claim that. But oh was I in for a surprise. Seriously the entire bag is full of larger then fist size pieces, I put 4-5 pieces into my chimney starter and lit it with vegetable oil soaked kitchen paper and then broke down the pieces once fully lit in my grill.
Burning - it lit to my surprise without any sparks. I had dealt with South American charcoal before so was expecting sparks flying everywhere but surprisingly there were no sparks whatsoever. It just lit without a fuss and the 4 big pieces of charcoal I used lasted me for what i was cooking, a couple of steaks, some burgers, corn, chicken etc - I could have kept going but run out of food to grill.
Smoke/Flavor - I recently had made the bad experience of cooking with Mesquite Charcoal, I really didn't like that flavor. I prefer a subtle, oaky/woody flavor that is not too overwhelming. This was right up my ally, actually I was standing with my son next to the grill enjoying the smoke and taking it in, waiting for the food to get ready. It was perfectly delicious.
So in conclusion, I am actually back here on Amazon to order me some more bags. I really like this and want to have some stock over the holidays. I can only recommend it. Great product!
BGE = dirty and small pieces. Eh.
Rookwood = faster light and higher heat. Best for quick cooks and pizza.
Weekend Warrior Jakes Blend = Great charcoal but the pieces are smaller than Fogo.
Fogo is a great all round charcoal.
Pros: Large lump means you get consistent, low temp burns. I have smoked for 12 hrs and still had enough for a regular weekday cook.
Cons: It takes a bit longer to light and takes much longer to get to high temp but will stay clean the whole cook.
This charcoal comes in a huge bag and has a lot of large chunks. I keep an old hammer near the grill for breaking up some of the bigger pieces. They are all lovely charcoal, all the way through. Fogo seems to have fewer little charcoal bits than other suppliers which is nice since I get my charcoal shipped by Amazon which means a lot of little charcoal chips when I've ordered other brands.
The piece sizes vary substantially based on where they came out of the bag; 6" diameter pieces on top and the bottom 10% being less than 1/2" and another 10% of the bag being unusable dust which just clogs the fire bowl and makes it impossible to reach high temperatures until the dust/small bits burn out.
Also, there is tons of thick black smoke for about 10 minutes when you first add new charcoal; don't plan on adding any with food present and keep your grill well away from your house or other structures you don't want stained black.
Update: I bought a bag of something else at Costco and I'm still regretting it but can't bring myself to throw it away. I guess I shell out the $50 for another bag. I was paying just $41 for it in April '15.
Now on my 2nd bag and the same issue is present. Package came in yesterday barely held together and once opened the Fogo bag has holes in it again. I'm dropping this to 2 stars to reflect the lost money in wasted charcoal that comes from poor packaging and the torn bags.
