After repeated trials, I contacted the site from which the trials were downloaded, and they gave me a phone number to call yet ANOTHER site. At that point, I said "Not worth it" and contacted Amazon. They refunded my money within the hour, even though the returned package was still in my outgoing mail.
. In a coup de gras of resplendent uselessness, the link does not give you a spam free access to their on line site. RUN AWAY from this, give the 20 bucks to a homeless person, or use it in the restroom, you will have gotten more use for the money that way, than you will spending it on this!
Gone is Wild Card a really cool feature for people who can not spell themselves out of a paper bag. People like me.
Eleventh Edition works on Windows 8. It opens from the hard drive on the slow slide but works fine. Word Fetch is cool. Highlight a word in any document when Webster's is open then Control + cc and you get the definition real fast. This Webster's is inferior to the American Heritage Talking Dictionary. However, American Heritage is not compatible passed XP. To bad. it was real cool. It ain't made no mo.
The audio pronunciation is cool. Checked tons of words almost every one of them was pronounced.
Everything the same for Vista. Vista is slightly faster to open.
Am sure the foibles others have mentioned hold true. I registered one license.
You get Dictionary/Thesaurus with activation code for two computers. The other stuff is fluff like the Medical Dictionary. Am sure malaria, chicken pox (on your house), cortex this and that, lungs are defined.
This Webster's Eleventh is better in my opinion than the OED. OED is a Model "T" in the 21st Century for 8 times the price. It has no audio pronunciation. And it has built in excessive paranoia. Have two useless versions of this highly regarded scholars lexicon that should not be highly regarded. It is light years behind Webster's in new words. But if you need to Keats on sylvan pastoral Neptune, locks did shed a deafening blindness here and there willy-nilly. Man than this is your cup of tea.
The Webster's staff are on the dim/slow witted side. Their answering machines were playing a George Frederick Handle piece that was completely beautiful. They did not even know who Handle was. And were pitifully slow to do anything and in the final analysis did nothing. So goes Equal Opportunity... They hang on every word the telephone company will utter. Like they said. Possession is 9/10 of the law. Tough! Fearless leader.
1 - A really complete database, comparable to ODE and NOAD
2 - Including both Dictionary and Thesaurus
3 - A vast sound collection including almost all parts of speech
4 - Sound quality of the pronunciations are unsurpassed by any other dictionary
5 - You can make folders for your bookmarks and categorize them.
6 - You can simultaneously have it installed on two machines
7 - By using a keyboard combination you can call the dictionary from within Adobe Reader, MS Word or the Internet
I only have a minor problem with dictionary: I cannot use my bookmarks as flash cards (like having your entries on the left and their meanings on the right) so every time you want to review a word in your bookmark, have to open the word from the bookmark menu.
*** I have to update my review: the activation code does not work in re-installation. so it is not worth to buy it unless you use your OS for years without reinstalling.
the key did not at fist get accepted, you have to do the full install before it accepts the key.
It is a bit confusing for the install and selective format to install.
