This is a good hybrid of rock metal and Celtic folk music, using instruments from both genres. The main folk influence is from the flute and bouzouki. As a bonus, Shane MacGowan sings on two tracks from the traditional Irish canon (Spancil Hill & Ride On). At first listen some songs had more of a progressive metal sound than I would prefer, but I like it more with each listen. The female singer has quite a pleasant voice, there is just enough harsh growling type singing and the mix of rock and folk instruments goes together like ham & swiss. Considering metal's longtime concern with medieval & fantasy themes and imagery, it is natural to integrate it with historical instruments and sounds.
This was a huge disappointment. This is nothing like I thought it would be. It sounds like a really bad cross breed between the stage show Celtic Women and B-side Cranberries songs. Not good. Check out Waylander instead for Irish folk music/metal blend.

Several people whose tastes in music I have learned to trust and respect kept insisting that I check this one out. After it sold out a couple of times here and there I finally managed to get my hands on it and what a stellar album it turned out to be! Cruachan's previous album, The Middle Kingdom, while pleasant, had left no lasting impression on me and after a few listens it lay forgotten... On the other hand Folk-Lore has been on my playlist since the day I received it in the mail. Karen Gilligan's vocals have improved considerably - ask anyone who owns both Folk-Lore and The Middle Kingdom - she sounds more secure and is on pitch! The guest vocalist - Shane Mac Gowan (characterized by my friend Britton as sounding like an ancient Irish God) - adds aggressiveness and punch. The Celtic infuences are many - from the instruments to the themes. The album contains a mix of Irish folk songs (Ride On - the first single, Spancill Hill, The Rocky Road To Dublin) and originals (Susie Moran, Bloody Sunday, The Children of Lir, Exiles). A nice touch in the booklet - the band has taken the time to tell the stories which inspired the songs. Makes for a great read for those interested in Irish lore and history.
Many times I will find a CD that I immediately fall in love with, so much that I crave more. After buying other CDs from the same artist, I find that their style has changed for the worse. However, Cruachan is one of the few exceptions. Folk-Lore happens to be a rare find that is actually better than its previous brethren (Tuatha Na Gael and The Middle Kingdom). Musically, this album is very similar to The Middle Kingdom. Cruachan keeps its traditional instruments and female vocals with a dash of male vocals. In fact, I would be hard-pressed to say which CD I like better between the two if it wasn't for the fact that Folk-Lore has both Ossian's Return and Ride On, easily Cruachan's two best songs. I suggest once again that you sample both songs from Cruachan's website, although the sample from Ossian's Return doesn't sound nearly as good as the whole song really is. Very highly recommended and another triumph for folk metal.
Cruachan präsentieren sich auf dieser Scheibe in einer ausgewogenen Mischung aus Härte und zarten Folk-Melodien, weniger sperrig als auf ihrem Erstling "Tuatha Na Gael" und weniger seicht als auf "The MIddle Kingdom" , außerdem ist die Produktion um Längen besser. Ich kann beim besten Willen keine Schwächen in diesem Album finden, die Balance zwischen Black Metal und Irish Folk ist einfach perfekt. Los geht es mit dem wütenden "Bloody Sunday", die Geschichte einer friedlichen Demonstration in Nordirland, die am 30. Januar 1972 von britischen Truppen brutal beendet wurde. Die Halbballade "Death of a Gael" handelt von iner tragischen LIebe im frühmittelalterlichen Irland, die durch die Invasion der Wikinger jäh beendet wurde. Der Song erinnert vage an Blackmore's Night zu ihren besten Zeiten, trägt jedoch eindeutig die Handschrift von Cruachan. Das humoristische "The Rocky Road to Dublin" fängt in reinster Dubliners-Manier an und wird nach und nach immer rockiger. Erzählt wird die Geschichte eines mittellosen irischen Auswanderers, der in der Fremde sein Glück sucht. "Ossian's Return" (für mich der beste Cruachan-Song überhaupt) entführt uns in mythische Zeiten und zur tragischen Geschichte des Königs Ossian, der in der Anderswelt Tir Na Nog ein zeitloses, undbekümmertes Leben führt, sich aber nach seiner irdischen Heimat sehnt. Die Fee Niamh läßt ihn ziehen, warnt ihn jedoch, nicht vom Pferd abzusteigen, das wäre nämlich sein Tod. Ossian verläßt das Feenland, muß aber feststellen, daß in seiner irischen Heimat bereits Jahrhunderte vergangen sind. Als er einigen verunglückten Wanderern helfen will, reißt sein Sattel, und er stürzt zu Boden, wo er auf der Stelle stirbt. So weit die Legende, die von Cruachan meisterhaft in Szene gesetzt wird. "Spancil Hill" ist eine wehmütige Ballade, gesungen von Shane MacGowan (The Pogues) und handelt vom Traum eines irischen Auswanderers, der sich erneut in seinem Heimatdorf wähnt, bevor ein Hahnenschrei ihn weckt-in Kalifornien. Vom Fluch der Zeit handelt auch "The Children of Lir", die tragische Geschichte von verzauberten Geschwistern, die 300 Jahre als Schwäne leben mussten, bevor es ihne erlaubt wurde, sich in Menschen zurückzuverwandeln-und die danach am hohen Alter starben. "Ride On" handelt oberflächlich gesehen von einer nicht erwiderten Liebe, ist aber in Wirklichkeit eine kritische Betrachtung von verklärten Heldenfiguren. "Susie Moran" ist niemand anderes als die Großmutter der beiden Bandleader Keith und John O'Fathaigh, die Kurzbeschreibung ihre Lebens erinnert ein wenig an "Constance Eternal" von Skyclad, wo auch von einer Großmutter die Rede ist. Susie Morans hartes Leben ist jedoch auch ein Sinnbild der harten Zeiten im Irland des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Schlußlicht "Exiles" bezieht seinen Stoff abermals aus der irischen Sagenwelt und handelt von Machtmißbrauch und erzwungener Liebe-auch hier endet die Geschichte tragisch. Cruachan sind damit meilenweit von der bierseligen Irish Pub-Dudelei entfernt-ihr Stil ist bisweilen rau und spröde, glänzt aber durch wilde Schönheit-eine Eigenschaft, die sie mit ihren Landsleuten von Primordial teilen. Wer sich nun fragt, ob Cruachan je wieder ein solches Album aufnehmen werden, muss leider enttäuscht werden. Nachdem Sängerin Karen Gilligan die Band verließ, orientieren sich Cruachan zunehmend wieder am rauen Black Metal. Kauft diese Perle also, solange sie noch erhältlich ist!
